Joining the Government of National Unity has proven fruitful for several leaders of parties that joined the coalition, including John Steenhuisen, Velenkosini Hlabisa, Gayton McKenzie, Pieter Groenewald and Patricia de Lille.

After more than two weeks of negotiation, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his cabinet on Sunday night.

He made several changes to the structure of his executive, including splitting ministries.

Groenewald gets Correctional Services ministry

Among the changes was the division of the Department of Justice from the Correctional Services Ministry.

Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Groenewald was appointed Correctional Services minister, with the ANC’s Lindiwe Ntshalintshali as deputy.

Groenewald has been leader of his party since 2016 and an MP from 1994 to 1999 and then again from 2001.

He most recently served as a member of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Policing.

IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa was also appointed to cabinet, taking over from Thembi Nkadimeng as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

His deputies are the ANC’s Dickson Masemola and Zolile Burns‐Ncamashe.
