South Africa mourns the loss of legendary actor Darlington Michaels, who has passed away after a period of declining health. Michaels, celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela on the popular SABC3 soap opera Isidingo, passed away on Friday, 13 September 2024. He had been admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto just a week prior, struggling with breathing difficulties.

Michaels made his mark on South African television when he joined Isidingo in 1998, captivating audiences with his flamboyant character. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Papa G’s signature floral shirts, flashy gold jewellery, and smooth Tsotsi taal made him one of the most memorable characters in local television history.

Born into a family of artists, Michaels began his acting career under the mentorship of South African theatre icon, Gibson Kente. He later ventured into television, with Isidingo cementing his legacy. Michaels also made notable appearances in other productions, including the Mzansi Magic sitcom Chandies, where he portrayed the conman Daliza in 2012.

The South African entertainment industry has been pouring out tributes to the beloved actor. The SABC expressed its condolences, stating: “His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered.” Fans and colleagues alike have taken to social media to remember the actor, sharing heartfelt tributes and reflecting on the lasting impact Michaels had on South African television .
