Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership table on Tuesday night after a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium.

José Riveiro praises the depth of Orlando Pirates squad after 3-0 win

Goals from Evidence Makgopa and Deon Hotto secured the win, marking the Buccaneers’ fourth straight league victory this season.

The result keeps Pirates’ 100% league record intact, putting them first in the standings with 12 points from four matches.

Tuesday’s win also came as a relief for the Soweto giants following their recent league cup upset by Magesi FC over the weekend.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was pleased with his team’s reaction, particularly after their weekend disappointment.

“Whether the four victories in a row is something expected or not, it doesn’t matter what I think.

“What I can say is that we were really working hard to make it possible; that’s what we have done so far in the league,”

Riveiro said post-match.

The coach praised his side’s defensive performance, noting how crucial it was in securing all three points.

“Today, especially in defence, I think the team was really good. It’s about working for it more than expecting to get victories. That part of the job has been really good so far with the group,” Riveiro added.

Looking ahead, Riveiro stressed the importance of treating every game as a final, noting that consistency is key to maintaining their position at the top.

“If we want to achieve important things, we have to be forward-looking in every game. It doesn’t matter where we play, who is the opponent, or what we are playing for,” he said.

Riveiro added that Pirates are well aware of the intensity required to challenge for the league title.

“We are already experienced in the league, in the marathons, to understand that what this league demands in terms of points is a huge number,” he said, adding that every game needs to be approached with the same focus and determination.

Pirates’ next challenge comes in the form of AmaZulu on Friday, with the team eager to extend their winning streak.

“We need to be there each and every game, fight for the three points, and understand that we play in finals every time there’s a PSL game,” Riveiro reiterated.
