Laura Muir is gunning for gold at Paris 2024, aiming to go one better than her silver at the delayed Tokyo Games last time around. However, Muir tells Eurosport in an exclusive sit-down that she is aware "the event has never been stronger", making her task a difficult one. World record holder Faith Kipyegon is among her main competitors.

Laura Muir has hailed the incredible quality in the women's 1500m event as she targets another podium finish at the Olympic Games.

Muir claimed a silver medal at Tokyo 2020, but faces stiff competition in Paris from the likes of Faith Kipyegon, who will be targeting a third consecutive gold medal in this event.

“The event has never been stronger,” Muir told Eurosport ahead of the Games.

“Not just the strength, but in terms of the depth – with the number of people running very fast times – is crazy. It's also very exciting to be a part of that as well.

“I'm really fortunate going into these Olympics that I am an Olympic medallist, I have that silver from Tokyo.

“So I know, regardless, that I'm always going to be an Olympic medallist and, hopefully, I can add to that.

“But at the end of the day, I just want to really enjoy this experience and do the best that I can on the day. I'm going to go in there and try and be as competitive as I can.”

Muir set a time of 3:53.79, while Kenyan Kipyegon clocked 3:49.04, which surpassed her previous best of 3:49.11.

She highlighted how having many different game plans is crucial to achieving Olympic success, and the unpredictability of the event.

Olympic legends to lead Eurosport coverage of Paris 2024

“The 1500 is such a tactical race, and it can be run in so many different ways. And then, depending on how it's run, it will suit different athletes.

“So I think you can run it 10 times and then get 10 different results. It's such an unpredictable event, so I think that's what makes it really exciting to watch.

“In the 1500, you have to be aware of what's going on around you, you have to make sure you're covering moves, especially if it's a bit slower as well.

“People are going to be getting clipped and tripped so you've got to be on the ball and also have a couple of plans in your head about how you want to execute the race.

“But then you also have another selection of plans if it goes differently as well, so you've got to be very focused on what's happening.”
