Newcastle vs Aston Villa - Premier League - Live score and updates
HT: Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa
A half of two quarters? Plenty of incidents from the first period at St James' Park. Mings' unfortunate injury definitely had an effect on the atmosphere and even seemed to subdue the fans.
The Magpies have a deserved lead and will probably feel they could have scored more, while Villa will similarly look back on their first 45 and wonder what might have been.
It's all set up wonderfully for the second period.
45+8' Crazy play from Martinez
The Villa keeper rushes out of his box but is beaten to the ball by Almiron, who he then brings down. Newcastle wanted a red card, but there were two Villa defenders on the cover.
45+5' Brilliant defending from Konsa
The Villa defender ends a threatening Newcastle counter attack before it could materialise.
45+2' Nearly a comedy concession for Villa
Kamara loses his boot in the build-up before slipping in an attempt to clear on the edge of his box. Luckily for the visitors Newcastle failed to generate a clean strike on goal.
41' Big chance for Diaby
Neat play between Luiz and Diaby puts the new Villa man in on goal from a wide angle, but Diaby's right-footed shot can only find the side netting.
40' Villa trying for another leveler
Emery's team have been second best thus far but remain a danger with the pace of Diaby and Bailey
35' Villa chance
Douglas Luiz fails to get a solid head on the corner from Digne. The Brazilian was unmarked in the six-yard area and should have scored.
32' Players getting back up to speed
The stoppage for the Mings injury has clearly taken its toll on the pace of the encounter. Newcastle have resumed control but Villa remain a potent threat on the break.
30' Action back underway
A distraught Mings leaves the field on a stretcher. It looks to be the second serious injury for the club in a matter of days following Buendia's ACL injury.
25' Injury stoppage
Mings looks in a bad way after a coming together with Isak in the lead up to Villa's chance. The centre back will have to be taken off and replaced by Pau Torres
23' Watkins chance
A great opportunity on the break from Watkins goes begging. Diaby continues to be at the centre of every good thing for Villa and his pass into the English forward set up a glorious chance that he could only hit wide.
19' Villa enjoy some dominance
Momentum in the tie continues to swing with each strike on goal. It's Villa's turn to have their say, though they've been unable to consistently test Pope in the Newcastle goal.

Isak vindicates selection
What a game these two sides are playing out. Newcastle make the most of a well worked free-kick that saw Botman knock the ball back to Isak to tap home. After a VAR check, Newcastle get to celebrate taking the lead once more.

GOAL! Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa (Isak)
14' Newcastle command possession
The home side threatened to run away with the game before Villa's equaliser but they've got their foot on the ball once more and are probing their visitors goal.
17:42
Debut goal for Diaby
Digne put in the cross from the left flank and Diaby calmly passes the ball into the back of the net on his weaker foot. Villa could have been two down but they're now back level.
17:41
GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa (Diaby)
9' Diaby chance
Villa get some joy on the break through Diaby rushing through on goal. The new Villa man was forced wide and failed to threaten Pope.
8' Tonali should have made it two
Emi Martinez comes to the rescue for Villa. The Argentine thwarted Tonali's effort from close range
17:38
What a start
Dream start for the debutant. The Italian acrobatically dispatches Gordon's cross
17:36
GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa (Tonali)
4' Newcastle nearly find a way through
Some get play on the middle of the park led to a teasing through ball for Isak to run onto. But Mings did well to get in ahead of the Newcastle striker and clear.
1' Fast start to the game
This one could be a cracker. Inside the first minute Gordon showed his lightning speed before Diaby threatened to get in behind the Newcastle defence.

Big opportunity for players in black and white
Ahead of a campaign that includes Champions League football, there are several starters today who will be desperate to capitalise on their position in Eddie Howe's starting XI.
17:18
Newcastle to remain active in the market, if possible
Eddie Howe has warned Newcastle’s hierarchy they are still one player light, but he has been told the club must be ‘creative’ if they are to make more signings.
The head coach was told at the start of the summer he had a £75million budget to work with, if players were not sold. Allan Saint-Maximin’s £25million move to Saudi Arabia has allowed Howe to add Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento to the early capture of Sandro Tonali, but he still wants another defender.

Blow for Aston Villa this week
Aston Villa have made an offer to take Italy midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Galatasaray with option to buy for £17 million plus add-ons.
This comes following reports that Unai Emery's side were working on a deal for the Italian midfielder just months after he completed a move to Turkey.
It also comes as Emery seeks a replacement for Emi Buendia who this week suffered an ACL injury.
