Villa to play part in thrillerNewcastle and Villa both enjoyed impressive 2022-23 campaigns. The Magpies secured a place in the Champions League with a fourth-placed finish while Villa earned a crack at the Europa Conference League by ending up seventh.
It seems wise to expect that these sides will be again fighting it out for European qualification this season so Saturday’s curtain-raiser could potentially be a key game for both clubs, and Newcastle can be expected to secure maximum points with home advantage.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has made some impressive signings this summer, adding to an already strong squad, while Villa also enter the new season with high expectations after some eye-catching business of their own.
The Magpies were a real force at home last term, particularly in the first half of the season, and lost just twice in the league at St James' Park.
Villa, meanwhile, failed to win any of their final four away games so home advantage could prove the difference on Saturday, although Unai Emery’s visitors can at least get on the scoresheet.
Villa have scored in 22 of their 24 league and cup games in 2023 and they found the net in all of their pre-season assignments. Newcastle conceded in 10 of their final 11 games last term, so backing the hosts to win and both teams to score appeals.

Luiz looks worth a shotThe shots-on-target market is popular with bet-builder backers and selecting Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz to test Newcastle keeper Nick Pope at St James’ Park appeals as a standout single wager too.
The Brazilian averaged 0.9 shots per game last season and his shooting accuracy during his time at Villa Park stands at a respectable 33 per cent.
Luiz could well be on set-piece duties for Villa on Saturday, further strengthening his case for an attempt on target.
The 25-year-old has been linked with north London rivals Arsenal and Spurs recently, but he is still expected to line up alongside Boubacar Kamara in the heart of Villa’s midfield on Tyneside despite that reported interest.

Bring in Wilson for 21/10 bet builderThere will undoubtedly be a lot of focus on the new players lining up for both sides on Saturday but England striker Callum Wilson remains a standout any-time goalscorer option.
The Newcastle forward scored 18 goals in 31 Premier League games last term and was on target for England in June. Bank on Wilson, who has had a productive pre-season and actually netted against the Villans in the 3-3 friendly draw, to get his campaign up and running with an opening-day effort.
Another player who has impressed for Newcastle during pre-season is Miguel Almiron. He scored against Rangers, Chelsea and Fiorentina to make him all but certain to start against Villa.
The Paraguayan was reborn under Eddie Howe last term and he ended the campaign with 11 top-flight goals, with only Wilson (18) managing more for the Magpies.
Almiron has kept that form going ahead of the new campaign and he should be able to test the goalkeeper in front of a packed St James’ Park.
