Earlier in the day, New Zealand were invited to bat and lost Devon Conway in the second over itself. Tom Latham couldn't capitalize on the start he got and perished on 20. But after that, it was all about these two stitching up a brilliant partnership of 219 runs, the third-highest third-wicket partnership for the Kiwis, from facing the swing and the seam earlier to batting till the end of the day. Williamson looked in extreme control as he hit some beautiful cover drives early on and was joined by Ravindra equally who, at first couldn't find any gaps but when he did, he didn't look back. They charged up against the pacers in the last half hour or so of the extended session and helped to post 258 on the board on the very first day.

Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra concluded the day's play unbeaten on 112 and 118, respectively, both playing over 200 deliveries each, showcasing patience, resilience and skill throughout the day. Despite surviving chances, both batsmen capitalized on loose deliveries, with Ravindra securing his maiden Test Century after being promoted up in the batting order. Kane Williamson too, breached the 100-run mark for the 30th time in his Test career. South Africa persisted with their pace attack, with Duan Olivier and Tsepho Moreki delivering extended spells, albeit without making breakthroughs. Neil Brand, the South African skipper and the only spinner of the pack, too, couldn't generate any breakthrough. Despite commendable ground fielding, the visitors dropped a couple of catches that proved costly.
