Throughout 2024, Minecraft has been celebrating its 15th anniversary, featuring global initiatives, product releases and much more as fans eagerly await the release of A Minecraft Movie, slated to arrive at cinemas worldwide on 4th April 2025. Yesterday, the franchise sought to build on that excitement by dropping the first ever trailer for the movie.

The first-ever feature length live adaptation Minecraft film, A Minecraft Movie stars Jason Mamoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers (Wednesday), Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy, Lisey’s Story), and Jennifer Coolidge. In the trailer, fans meet four misfits – Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks), who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. There, they meet Steve (Black), an expert crafter. To get back home, the five will have to be bold and reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

With it’s colourful, blocky aesthetic and unmistakeably Minecraft storyline, the trailer, which can be viewed below, promises to be a superb new way for fans of the 15-year-old franchise to immerse themselves in the creative world of Minecraft.

As brand awareness and engagement continues to build, Toy World and Licensing.biz have taken a deep dive into the brand with a dedicated feature on all things Minecraft in celebration of its 15th anniversary.

In an exclusive interview, Federico San Martin, senior director of Minecraft Consumer Products, tells Toy World what’s behind the enduring success of the game and why there are plenty of opportunities still to mine within the content and consumer product spaces.

Always looking to build on its success, Minecraft continues its expansion across the globe with new partners signing all the time. You can find out more about them within the pages of the feature.

“The Minecraft Consumer Products programme has been very important to the game’s success, significantly contributing to its widespread popularity and cultural impact,” says Federico. “By expanding the brand beyond the digital realm, this programme has introduced a vast array of merchandise, including Toys, Apparel, Publishing and more, allowing fans to engage with Minecraft in their everyday lives. These products serve to reinforce brand loyalty and keep the game relevant.”

Readers can also discover how retail has played a huge part in the anniversary celebrations, and hear more about the release of A Minecraft Movie and the all-new CGI-animated series set in Minecraft’s blocky universe and currently in development with Netflix. Furthermore, the first immersive location-based experience from Minecraft – Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue – launches in Dallas, Texas with plans to expand across the US and globally, including Europe.
