There have been varying success rates for videogame adaptations recently. Sonic the Hedgehog is now on its third movie (and it has a TV series spin-off don’t you know), The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over a billion dollars at the box office and Fallout was a critical success for Prime Video. However, Borderlands was less of a critical success (we gave it just one star) and Halo has been canceled by Paramount+ after two seasons (though that decision is up for some debate). Now we have another videogame adaptation for the best-selling video game of all time, Minecraft, with A Minecraft Movie.

Check out the trailer…

A Minecraft Movie follows four misfits — Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie and Dawn — who find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre), the film stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle), Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Lisey’s Story), with Jennifer Coolidge.

A Minecraft Movie will be released in UK cinemas on April 4th 2025 by Warner Bros. Pictures
