HERNANDEZ THE DIFFERENCE AS MILAN EDGE OUT NAPOLI

Theo Hernandez’s goal proved the difference in a tight but entertaining affair between AC Milan and Napoli that saw the hosts stay unbeaten in Serie A in 2024.

Walter Mazzarri experimented with a 3-5-1-1 from kick-off that gave Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - Napoli’s saviour last time out - a free role behind Giovanni Simeone and the Georgian was his side’s most dangerous threat early on.

He almost set up the striker to hit the opener but after that shot slammed into the post, Napoli struggled to break down their hosts who took advantage after 25 minutes when Hernandez finished off a clinical counter attack for the game’s only goal.

Napoli reverted to a 4-3-3 after the break and it was a wonder that the second half remained scoreless with both sides creating plenty of chances as the game broke open.

But ultimately AC Milan held on and move just a point behind Juventus at least for 24 hours, with both on tonight's teams returning to European action in the next two weeks.

FULL-TIME: AC MILAN 1-0 NAPOLI

Theo Hernandez heads it clear and goes down injured under the challenge as Napoli hunt the rebound... But the goalscorer recovers as soon as he sees the referee blow for full-time and an AC Milan win! Their players actually jump for joy in the penalty area, they'll close to eight points behind their cross-city (and cross-stadium) rivals while Napoli haven't won away from home since November.

Politano's brought down outside the box by Theo Hernandez and earns a yellow card for his troubles, Napoli have one last chance...

Eventually the check is over for an obviously accidental handball and Milan have to survive five more minutes...

That play eventually led to a corner that was easily bloked by Milan - but was it blocked by Loftus-Cheek's hand? The VAR is checking...

MILAN HIT THE POST - THEIR OWN POST!

That was so nearly 1-1! Milan have had the chance bury this game multiple times but were almost punished as Lindstrom lifted it into the box and Jan-Carlo Simic nearly turned it into his own net, but the ball crashes into his post instead.

Rafael Leao has done everything today except score, and that chance shows why. He burst clear in acres of space but just seemed to shrink in front of goal before belatedly looking to give Theo Hernandez a tap-in, and the pass is cleared. Thankfully for Leao, the flag is up but he needs to put away chances like that.

85'

It's more a cumulative yellow for Juan Jesus, but he's been scrapping all game in the heart of defence. In other news, Google's win predictor for Napoli has just dropped below 1%.

Walter Mazzarri still has one up his sleeve but Alejandro Jimenez is Milan's last change. Florenzi just produced one of the touches of the season to set up a one-on-one but took too much time on the shot and was then pulled back for offside.

81'

Luka Jovic has scored five goals at an average of one per 41 minutes over the last seven games, and replaces Giroud with ten to go.

And the other substitute in that double-change is straight into the action as Politano's shot is blocked from about ten yards out. Mathias Olivera is on for Mazzochi, it still feels like anyone's game.

76'

Milan are looking more likely to score in the last 20 minutes as Pulisic hits the floor for one of the weakest penalty appeals of the season. Lindstrom has replaced Zielinski in a straight-swap in midfield and immediately leads the counter-attack.

73'

Leao's again at the centre of it, this time he's the provider setting Loftus-Cheek free down the right but the England player just can't reach it and the chance goes begging.

And some housekeeping, Giacomo Raspadori has been on the pitch for a while now in place of Simeone.

...Or at least got it on target. Napoli again gave away possession cheaply in midfield and Leao made a brilliant run on the left to collect Musah's pass. From there he shifts it onto his right foot and looks to curl it around Gollini - which he does, but also a yard past the post.

67'

And it's a second change as Simon Kjaer also makes way.

66'

Ismael Bennacer started just his third league game of the season today and has filled in well in midfield, but makes way now.

It's still Hernandez's goal that splits the teams, and he almost added a second with a smart scorpion kick from a corner, he's clearly been learning from club international teammate Giroud.

Napoli are looking open defensively since swapping a centre-back for a winger but Politano has made them a different team going forward, he's looked so dangerous cutting inside onto his left foot and his latest shot swings just past Maignan's right post, with the keeper struggling to get across.

PAST KJAER LIKE HE'S NOT THERE

Kjaer is lucky to avoid a foul there, he dived into a rash slide tackle on Kvaratskhelia and was only saved by the Georgian's slick footwork meaning he skipped out of contact before the Dane's defensive partner bails him out.
