ello and welcome to Sportstar’s coverage of today’s IPL 2024 clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians.

PBKS 13/2 in (1.4 Overs)

Bumrah to Curran, starts with two dots. A quick single next as Rossouw gets the strike. OUT!!!! Rossouw is bowled after missing Bumrah’s toe-breaker.

Rossouw b Jasprit Bumrah 1 (3)

PBKS 12/1 in 1 Over

Coetzee to Curran. FOUR!!!! Curran pushes the first ball through the covers for a boundary! FIVE MORE!!! Too wide off of leg-stump as the ball beats the keeper and runs behind for a boundary. A quick single follows.

OUT!!!!! Prabhsimran dismissed on his first ball, caught behind by a diving Ishan Kishan as he tries to pull it behind!

Prabhsimran c Ishan Kishan b Gerald Coetzee 0 (1)

Two singles and a dot to end the over as Rossouw comes in to bat.

SKY gives insights into MI’s batters’ meeting ahead of PBKS clash

Suryakumar: There was a batters meeting and we spoke about a batter batting for 15-16 overs. That’s what that (his celebration) was about. It took a little more time today but once Rohit got out, someone had to bat deep.

He also believes that the total is well above par if dew doesn’t come into play.

MI 192/7 in 20 Overs

Harshal begins with a wide bouncer. An lbw appeal comes up vs David off the very next ball, who plays the ball off his pads, which then runs past the keeper for four. Byes are given, but PBKS reviews for the LBW. David is more than safe as the replays suggest. David will eventually hole out to Sam Curran no less at long off. Easy catch this for Curran coming off an almost flat bat from David.

Tim David c Curran b Patel 14 (7b 2x4 1x6)

Romario Shepherd is the man in the middle and he gets off the mark with a single. Three balls to go in this final over for MI. Tilak looked to slog the ball over long on but the ball hits the spider cam. For a minute, everyone was wondering where the ball went. Dead ball called. Tilak repeats the same stroke as he tries to breach the fence, but will get just the single. Romario Shepherd holes out to Shashank Singh at deep square. Harshal had demanded the field setting and Curran is happy it worked, beaming back with a double thumbs up. Nabi comes in to face the last ball. He hit the ball straight into the middle stump at the other end. With Tilak having taken off and the stumps already rocked, Harshal just had to take the ball and pick the stumps which he does. Mumbai finishes with 192/7 in 20.

Three wickets and just seven runs come off this Harshal over. Good work this from PBKS. 62 runs come off the last five overs for MI. This is the highest total at this ground now.

MI 186/4 in 19 Overs

Curran to bowl the 19th. Tim David has replaced Hardik. Curran keeps David quiet but Curran goes a bit wide with the ball looking like it’s within the tram line. Tim David reviews and is vindicated. Tim David moved a bit outside his off stump region. Kartik Murali on comms is not happy with this wide being given to the bowler. Curran is smacked for a boundary through cover off the very next ball. Curran then opts for the bouncer but David pulls it for four., He then fires a slower delivery which David is happy to dispatch over deep midwicket for six. Another wide for Sam Curran who reviews the call to see if there’s contact with David’s body. Wide is not given. David not happy as he tries to understand what the logic is.

Wide - 4 - Wide - 4 - 6 for Sam Curran as he concedes 18 runs in this over.

MI 167/4 in 18 Overs

Harshal here for his third. Tilak mishits the two full tosses Harshal serves for him, but third time’s the charm as he smokes this short ball from Harshal over midwicket for six. Pure power and Tim David is delighted in the dugout. Hardik tries to get over the fence over the longer part of the ground but he holes out to Harpreet Brar instead. Harshal gets his man off the last ball of the delivery.

Hardik Pandya c Harpreet Brar b Patel 10 (6b 0x4 1x6)

MI 156/3 in 17 Overs

Curran to bowl out. He takes the pace off as Surya misses with his swing. The ball lost all energy as it fizzled out to the keeper. Curran then fires a wide one which Surya tries to chase. Has he put him down? NO! Prabhsimran’s safe hands plucks the ball out of the air and Surya has to walk back. He can’t help but smile. Wasn;t an easy catch this at backward point.

Suryakumar Yadav c Prabhsimran Singh b Curran 78 (53b 7x4 3x6)

Hardik joins Tilak and is off the mark with a single. Tilak runs a single through deep midwicket to bring up the MI 150. Hardik then smacks a full toss from Curran straight back to the bowler who can’t catch it. Oh this would have a nice wicket. Curran winces as he knows what he’s missed. Hardik makes it sting a bit more pulling a shorter delivery from Curran for six. Eight runs off this over.

MI 148/2 in 16 Overs

Rabada to bowl out and starts with a bumper. Tilak tries to pull but his shot is swiped before the ball comes on, sending it straight to his helmet. Physio will check him per protocol. OH LBW APPEAL! And it’s for SKY. Umpire’s finger goes up. MI will predictably review. Replay shows no bat involved. Hardik is waiting ready by the boundary ropes. Ball tracking saves Surya with the ball missing the stumps. DECISION OVERTURNED and there will be relieved hearts in the MI camp. Surya celebrates his lifeline with a boundary, lofted over cover yet again. Lovely shot this from the MI batter. The switch has been flipped as he sends Rabada to the top tier of the stands in the fine leg direction. Vintage SKY this as he bends just a bit to send the ball behind him for a maximum. Tilak wants to join the party as he fires Rabada into the stands over deep midwicket. 18 RUNS FROM THIS OVER. Just the over MI needed.

MI 130/2 in 15 Overs

Arshdeep to bowl his third. Wonder what’s happening with the wicket that Surya is suddenly looking a bit aggrieved. Kevin Pietersen also believes the dimensions of the boundary might play a role here. We’ll have to wait to hear from the MI players after their innings. Arshdeep changes his pace and SKY is just swinging with a hint of frustration. OH HERE IS THE BOUNDARY, AFTER 22 BALLS. Tilak Varma made some room for himself on the backfoot to see if the ball’s pace changed. Goes down the ground for four. He’s managed another one off the next ball, piercing extra cover and mid off for another boundary. Tilak is evidently looking to attack. Arshdeep bowls a wide and is punished by SKY with a four, the ball lofted over cover.

MI 115/2 in 14 Overs

Rabada returns for his third and it’s back to pace from Punjab. The host has stifled the boundary flow. A fairly tight line from Rabada with just the hint of a bait outside off to draw out a bad shot. 20 balls now since the last boundary. Proper slow down here. Will this cost MI?

MI 109/2 in 13 Overs

Harpreet to bowl his third. Quiet over so far, with four runs coming off ones and twos. Surya isn’t taking too many risks at the moment, he’s happy to send the ball along the ground in the gaps to keep the strike rotating. The tempo has slowed down a bit. No boundaries from the over. Eight runs conceded. And the timeout is taken.

MI 101/2 in 12 Overs

Curran returns for his second. Surya gets two through midwicket and a single pushed to long-on. A slower ball from Curran then crashes into Rohit’s helmet grill. Customary concussion protocol in effect as the physio checks him out. Rohit was looking to sweep and had got down low to do the same. Turns out it is the just the momentum break PBKS was looking for as Curran STRIKES. Rohit swings at a fuller delivery from Curran but Rohit doesn’t connect fully, with the ball heading to Harpreet Brar at backward point. Relief for the Punjab Kings. Tilak is the new batter. Just five runs from the over for Curran. Nicely done.

Rohit Sharma c Harpreet Brar b Curran 36 (25b 2x4 3x6)

MI 96/1 in 11 Overs - FIFTY FOR SURYA

Harshal returns for his second. Peppers Surya with a few short balls. He sends the second delivery for a single through deep square leg to bring up his fifty off 34 balls. Harshal slows it down to Rohit and the Hitman has sent the ball soaring straight down the ground for SIX. Wasn’t a bad ball from Harshal with Rohit also realising that he’ll have to push for this to clear the ropes. It clears Sam Curran by the ropes. A bigger ground and he would have been done for. A yorker to SKY to end the over. No run.

MI 86/1 in 10 Overs

Livingstone is back with the ball for his second over. Tries to attack the leg-stump as Surya hits it down for a single. A dot follows. A single next as Rohit pushes it on-side to get off the strike. SIX!!! Surya steps out and lofts it over the deep extra cover for a maximum. A dot follows. A single to end the over as Surya retains the strike.

MI 77/1 in 9 Overs

Brar to Surya as he sweeps it behind and almost finds the boundary, just a double. Two singles next. Surya sweeps it behind but mishits as the ball goes straight to the keeper. FOUR!!!!! Sweeps again but this time hits it true, this time ball runs through square leg for a boundary. A single to end the over.

MI 68/1 in 8 Overs

Rabada to Rohit. Swings it in as Rohit misses it complely, just a dot-ball. A single next as Rohit strikes it down towards the mid-wicket. Rabada finds Surya’s inside edge as the ball runs behind, double for Mumbai Indians. Surya flicks it behind as cool as you like it for a BIG SIX!!!!! A single to end the over.

MI 58/1 in 7 Overs

A dot and a single first as Brar comes in to bowl his first over. Rohit sweeps it behind, but just a single. Another single follows as Surya gets the strike. Rohit flicks it on-side next, gets an easy single. A dot to end, good over for the Kings.

MI 54/1 in 6 Overs

The skipper, Sam Curran joins the bowling attack. A dot first. FOUR!!! Surya finds the boundary behind after a perfect upper-cut! A dot-ball follows. Curran finds Surya’s pads but the umpire says not-out, the ball was pitching outside leg. Surya flicks it on-side but get a just a single. SIX!!!! A maximum to end the over as Rohit lofts it straight over the boundary line!

MI 43/1 in 5 Overs

Harshal Patel comes in for his first over, first ball too full as Surya strikes it down through mid-wicket for a FOUR!!!! A single next as Rohit gets the strike. A bit wide nest as Rohit drives but just a dot ball. A slow yorker next as he finds Rohit’s pads. MI takes a successful review as the wickets were missing, Rohit Sharma is NOT OUT!!!! Two singles to end the over.

MI 36/1 in 4 Overs

A quick single to begin Arshdeep’s second over. A dot follows as Rohit steps out but misses the bouncer completely. SIX!!!! Rohit pulls it over forward square leg for the first maximum of the night! Two singles next as MI keeps the runs coming in. A bit short next which goes for a dot to end the over

MI 27/1 in 3 Overs - Ishan Kishan departs!

OUT!!!!! Rabada dismisses Kishan off of the first ball. Kishan cuts the short ball behind towards deep back point for a six, but finds a fielder at the boundary line.

Ishan Kishan c Harpreet Brar b Kagiso Rabada 8 (8)

Two dots follows as Surya comes in early to bat. FOUR!!! Sky lofts it over mid-wicket for a boundary to get off the mark. FOUR MORE!!!! Surya cuts it behind through thir-man for another boundary as he starts strong. A single to end the over as he retains the strike.

MI 18/0 in 2 Overs

Arshdeep to Kishan, starts it a bit short and wide off-stump, Kishan slices it towards point for a single. Rohit flicks it on-side next for a single. FOUR!!!! A bit short and wide as Kishan cuts it over the third man for a boundary. Slices it thrugh the covers next for a single. FOUR MOREE!!! A bit full next as Rohit strikes it through mid-on for another boundary. Arshdeep ends with a dot as he almost finds Rohit’s edge.

MI 7/0 in 1 Over

Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma open as usual. Liam Livingstone is bowling the first over as PBKS chooses to start with spin.

A dot and a single to begin with as Rohit Sharma gets the strike and flicks it on-side to get off the mark. Kishan drives it in the covers next, just a dot. A single next. FOUR!!!! Rohit Sharma finds the gap in the covers and gets a boundary!

Slow Mullanpur track a challenge for MI?

Teams have had issues getting off to a good fast in Mullanpur: the powerplay run rate here is 7.11, slowest this season so far.

Rohit Sharma says he is not a fan of the impact player rule

India skipper Rohit Sharma is “not a big fan” of the IPL’s ‘Impact Player’ rule as he feels it is hurting the country’s all-rounders by not allowing cricketers like Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube to showcase their bowling prowess.

The ‘Impact Player’ Rule, introduced in the 2023 season, allows all IPL teams to substitute a player -- batter or bowler -- during their respective innings as per the demands of the match.

Rohit explained at length why, for the sake of entertainment, development of players shouldn’t be forgotten.

India, save Pandya, doesn’t have a genuine seam bowling all-rounder in contention for the T20 World Cup, although Dube’s name is being discussed.

“Eventually, cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. I am not a big fan of ‘Impact Player’, you are taking out so much from the game just because of little bit of entertainment, for people around,” he pointed out.

“...I can give you so many examples, guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl. For us (Indian team), it is not a good thing you know. I don’t know what you can do about it but I am not a fan of it, frankly speaking,” he said.
