Ronaldo in the Portugal team 'on merit,' says Martinez ahead of Euro 2024 opener

It is "too soon" to know if Kylian Mbappe will be able to continue at Euro 2024, claims the France Football Federation president Philippe Diallo.

Mbappe suffered a broken nose late on in France's opener against Austria on Monday, coming together with Kevin Danso, before he was substituted and taken for x-rays.

Diallo insists the initial outlook for the striker is positive, but no time frame has been put on his return.

It had been earlier reported that Mbappe could be set to miss his country's next Group D match against the Netherlands on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, Diallo said: "The first responses were quite positive as there is no surgery planned for the moment.

“Now, it is too soon to know if he will be able to play for the remainder of the tournament, or to provide a schedule for his situation.

“Obviously there were some medical examinations performed on site to know more about Kylian Mbappe’s nose and they made some conclusions pretty quickly.

“They tried to reduce the aftermath of his fracture, for him to be able to remain in the tournament.

“As I said, there is no surgery planned for the moment and we are still waiting for things to evolve later in order to know more about the conditions of his participation in the remainder of the tournament.”

Mbappe himself posted on social media asking his followers for mask design ideas.

France, among the favourites to clinch the title, play the Netherlands on Friday before their clash with Poland the following Tuesday.

Following the incident, an initial statement from the French Federation read: “Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second half of the Austria v France match this Monday in Duesseldorf.

“The captain of the French team was first taken care of by the medical staff and doctor Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed a broken nose. Diagnosis confirmed during radiological examinations at the Duesseldorf hospital.

“Kylian Mbappe has returned to the base camp of the French team. He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately.

“A mask will be made so as to allow the number 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment.”
