Thousands of young pupils have been waiting anxiously for their final matric results, which are being released later than usual this year.
Umalusi, the quality assurance body tasked with assessing the credibility and integrity of the results, has given the go-ahead for their release this week.
When will the results be published?
Individual matric results for Independent Examinations Board (IEB) pupils will be available online from 00:01 on 18 January.
Individual National Senior Certificate (NSC) results will be published online at 06:00 on 20 January for most provinces. The Western Cape will publish its results at 16:00 the same day.
For those interested in the country's overall matric performance, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to hold a media briefing to announce the national results at 18:00 on 19 January.
Where and how can I access my results?
To find your matric results online, you can type in your examination number on News24's Matric Results Portal.
The portal will only display the results of those who have opted in to have their results published in the media in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act.
Pupils who did not opt in will have to contact their school or provincial education department to get their results.
Results may be omitted due to technical reasons. If learners cannot access them online, they are advised to contact their school.
How many people are expecting their results?
The matric class of 2022 has the largest cohort of candidates to date. A total of 753 964 full-time and 167 915 part-time candidates were registered to write the final matric exams.
They began writing on 31 October 2022 and finished their last papers on 7 December 2022.

Why are they being released so late?
According to education officials, the results are being released so late to accommodate changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
School calendars were disrupted in 2020, creating a domino effect that pushed back timetables for the previous two years.
The Department of Higher Education and Training remains confident that universities won't be negatively impacted by the shorter timeframe between the release of the results and registration for new undergraduate students.
What if I want to improve my results?
If you're not satisfied with your results, the next opportunity to complete or improve your results is in May/June 2023.
According to the basic education department, you can register online or at a district office from 1 October 2022 to 8 February 2023.
What other deadlines do I need to know?
Pupils who need academic funding in 2023 are urged to submit their applications to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) with all the required supporting documents by no later than 31 January 2023.

Here are the NSC pass requirements according to the DBE:
Admission to bachelor studies
Must obtain at least 40% for the candidate's home language (this is compulsory);Must obtain at least 50% for the candidate's four other subjects, excluding Life Orientation;Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution;Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject; andMust pass at least six of the seven subjects.Admission to diploma studies
Must obtain at least 40% for the candidate's home language (this is compulsory);Must obtain at least 40% for three of other subjects, excluding Life Orientation;Must obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution;Must obtain at least 30% for one other subject; andMust pass at least six of the seven subjects.Admission for higher certificate studies
