The Investigating Directorate (ID) says National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula appears to only want to be charged with corruption after the 29 May elections – and has denied her claims it wants to do so sooner to trigger the ANC's step-aside rule.
"The step-aside rule is hardly any reason to institute proceedings against [Mapisa-Nqakula], as not a single one of the respondents [law enforcement authorities] cited would be the national speaker of Parliament upon her having stepped aside in accordance with an internal ANC policy that has no bearing on the law and criminal procedure," ID deputy director Bheki Manyathi states in papers filed at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.
"In short, none of the respondents has an interest in the political position of [Mapisa-Nqakula]."
