Kwaito legend Mapaputsi passes on at 45

Legendary Kwaito musician Sandile Ngwenya, affectionately known as Mapaputsi, has passed on at the age of 45.

Mapaputsi’s management has confirmed his death today, saying that he succumbed to a year-long illness, which he succumbed to in hospital.

Mapaputsi’s family had asked for privacy during the time of his hospitalisation after the “Manga Manga” hitmaker fell ill towards the end of last year.

Last month, the seemingly better musician shared that he was recuperating and was looking forward to making more music.

“I am feeling much better now, and yes, I was sick, but I can say that I am recovering. And I was recently in Durban, …I am doing much better,” shared the “Woza Friday” hitmaker.

Mapaputsi also rubbished claims that he was bedridden in a video, which as posted on his WhatsApp status last month.

Mapaputsi appeared on a podcast with MacG two years ago, sharing developments on his music career.

His 26 years long music career has afforded him opportunities to work with Zola, TKZee, and DJ Sbu, amongst others.

He also won Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito song in 2003 at the Metro FM Awards.

Ngwenya’s management says they will issue a press release and hold a media briefing in due course.
