United want Amorim

The Athletic reports that Manchester United have already started work to appoint Ruben Amorim as manager.

The Sporting CP boss was linked with the Liverpool vacancy before Arne Slot was given the role, but is said to be willing to consider the switch to Old Trafford.

The website writes: “Manchester United are working on a deal to appoint Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

“Sources in Portugal, speaking anonymously as they’re not authorised to discuss the matter, have told The Athletic the 39-year-old is open to taking up the opportunity after Erik ten Hag was sacked earlier on Monday.

“United are ready to pay the €10 million (£8.3m) release clause in his contract with the two clubs in talks to finalise a deal that could see Ruud van Nistelrooy take interim charge before Amorim’s arrival.

“Amorim has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after young managers after a run of success with the Portuguese club, with United moving quickly after making him their No. 1 target to be Ten Hag’s replacement.”

Terzic named as potential replacement

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic is also a potential replacement for the sacked Dutchman Ten Hag.

With Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate out of the running, The Sun puts Terzic’s name in the picture.

The paper reports: “Edin Terzic has rocketed to the top of Manchester United’s wishlist as they target replacements for sacked Erik Ten Hag.

“The Dutchman was axed with the club languishing in 14th following a shocking 2-1 defeat at West Ham - with the club also winless in their three Europa League matches.

“Thomas Tuchel had been top of the shortlist to replace Ten Hag.

“But the former Dortmund, PSG, Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager is no longer available after the FA swooped to name him England manager.

“Gareth Southgate was also a favoured candidate, but he recently suggested he didn’t want to rush back into management and could take a full year off.

“So United are now focusing on Edin Terzic - after SunSport exclusively revealed he was a new favourite earlier this month.”

Solskjaer could make Utd return

Another name mentioned is former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who would be a more affordable option.

With Ten Hag’s compensation yet to be agreed, United might be under financial pressure.

“Manchester United have not ruled out making an approach for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after sacking Erik ten Hag,” the Daily Mail explains.

“Ten Hag was dismissed this morning after two-and-a-half years in charge with the 2-1 defeat by West Ham condemning United to 14th place in the Premier League.

“United have won just three of their opening nine top-flight matches and are 21st in the new-look Europa League, having drawn their three opening fixtures.

“Ten Hag could cost United around £17 million in compensation and this may lead to a move for Solskjaer, who has been out of management since being sacked by The Red Devils in November 2021. Indeed, he is said to be in contention for a comeback.”

Ten Hag wants hefty severance

After signing a new contract in the summer at Manchester United, Ten Hag is hoping for serious compensation.

The Daily Star mentions £7 million as the minimum figure that he could be due after his departure.

The paper states: “Erik ten Hag wants to receive major compensation after he was sacked by Manchester United.

“United announced that Ten Hag had left his role at the club following the controversial 2-1 defeat at West Ham United on Sunday. The result left The Red Devils with just one win in their last eight games - a run that stretches back to the 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

“The decision to sack Ten Hag was unanimous between Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Barrada, Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and United sporting director Dan Ashworth. And the Dutchman is said to have accepted the decision with good grace.

“He had run out of excuses, and instructed his legal team, including agent Kees Vos, to begin negotiations over compensation that could exceed £7m. Ten Hag signed a new contract extension until 2026 with United in the summer.”
