REPORT: TIMBER AND SALIBA ON TARGET AS AMORIM SUFFERS FIRST PREM LOSS

Arsenal rallied with a ruthless second-half performance to end Ruben Amorim’s honeymoon in charge of Manchester United in brutal fashion with a 2-0 win.

Thomas Partey had missed from a corner at point-blank range to warn the Red Devils that Arsenal remained a danger from the set piece despite missing Gabriel through injury, and the visitors had no answers in the second period.

Arsenal hit their stride after half-time and Jurrien Timber’s glancing header set them on course for victory before Partey made amends by heading into William Saliba’s back to double a lead that Manchester United never looked likely to overcome.

Amorim’s heavily rotated side played for a goalless draw from virtually the first minute and showed almost no threat in attack, dropping back into the bottom half of the Premier League as Arsenal cut two points from Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table.

FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

Though Manchester United finish on the front foot, they've been consummately outplayed tonight. Arsenal weren't at their best in the first half but have more than made up for that by surging to the finish, posing a threat with every ball into the box and finish with three hugely comfortable points on the night Liverpool were held to a draw in Newcastle.

Manchester United drop back into the bottom half of the Premier League though, and having offered precious little in attack the scale of the challenge facing Ruben Amorim is stark.

Arsenal are loving this. The corner swings in towards the centre of the goal and Onana is again rushed. This time he manages to swat it away for De Ligt to clear, but they could've had four or five today.

There is another goal in this one, the only question is for whom? Trossard has looked really threatening in his 20-minute spell while United's quartet of attackers still possess quality if the opportunity presents itself. For now, the Belgian wins a corner.

That's really neat from United, however it still ends up in Raya's arms. Antony peels off the free-kick committee to the left of the wall and Fernandes finds him in space with a perfectly-weighted pass, but the angle is against the Brazilian and he can't find the net.

Odegaard opened his Premier League account for the season last time out, and should've paid more into it there! Trossard dances through the defence and pulls it back for the Norweigian but he hesitates for a second and the shot is blocked.

It surely won't make a difference though.

It's the last chance saloon for the Red Devils - to at least show some invention in attack. They've lost their focal point, but right now Arsenal continue on the front foot and look more likely to score.

Arsenal are running rampant now. Manchester United look ragged and concede another corner, this one finds Merino with a free header from close range but he sends it wide and Onana gets a moment's respite.

GOAL! ARSENAL 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (SALIBA)

It doesn't matter how they go in! Arsenal switch the point of attack for this set piece, swinging the corner to the back post and Partey heads back across the crowded six-yard box, deflecting off Saliba's back and into the net.

This is surely game over.

Trossard surges forward on the left, up against fellow substitute Yoro. It's the pair's first duel since the Belgian was introduced and Yoro wins it with a steadfast challenge on the back foot, but a poor clearance allows Arsenal to scramble a corner.

71'

Trossard replaces Martinelli in the attack but the more interesting change is the introduction of Mikel Merino, who will join the midfield three as Thomas Partey drops to full-back.

Arsenal will likely drop below Chelsea tonight after the Blues won 5-1 against Southampton - the pair were only separated by alphabetical difference this morning - but can make inroads on the top of the Premier League as a late Fabian Schar equaliser limited Liverpool to a point.

SO CLOSE TO STRIKING BACK!

Arsenal aren't the only threat from set pieces! Fernandes lifts a wonderful outswinging cross that De Ligt meets firmly and directs back across goal.

It's perfectly orchestrated but Raya more than matches it with a superb save at full stretch to his left.

Leny Yoro has slotted in on the right of the back three in his first competitive action for the Red Devils after picking up a pre-season injury against none other than Arsenal.

Joshua Zirkzee also bagged a brace against Everton and Amorim turns to him now. His first involvement is a defensive one, as Arsenal send in a carbon copy of the corner that produced Timber's goal but this time the Dutchman heads it just past the far post.

Odegaard and Saka in full flow are a joy to watch, and they almost combine for a goal there.

The Norweigian takes out three defenders with a sumptuous pass but Saka fires straight at Onana before the flag is raised. That stoppage means Amorim can make a triple-change.

They were solid in defence and fairly lifeless going forward in the first half, but the onus is now on Manchester United to attack.

Immediately they take up possession on the edge of the final third.

GOAL! ARSENAL 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (TIMBER)

What did we say earlier - no Gabriel, no problem? Arsenal strike again from a corner, rushing to the near post and Timber's glancing header is enough!
