Liverpool and Arsenal leapfrogged Manchester City in the Premier League table with crucial victories this weekend. Both sides surprisingly lost home matches last weekend before exiting Europe in midweek.

They got back to winning ways though as Liverpool beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday, after Arsenal had edged out Wolves. The title contenders also have a midweek fixture to play before City returns to action.

Arsenal go first up against Chelsea while Jürgen Klopp's side then face a Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park. The two sides can open up a four-point gap on City, who would have two games in hand.

City did progress to the FA Cup final on Saturday but will not want to lose too much ground in the title race. Pep Guardiola's side faces a trip to Brighton on Thursday night.

Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the Premier League and across the continent to see what's going on at Liverpool's rivals including transfer competition from Newcastle as Manchester United reportedly eyes a managerial change.

Newcastle lines up three Reds targets?

Newcastle is reportedly ready to fight Liverpool for Juventus defender Dean Huijsen. The 19-year-old has earned rave reviews while on loan at Roma this season with former boss José Mourinho branding him 'one of the best prospects in Europe'.

It was reported by Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this month that Liverpool were eyeing a move for Huijsen this summer as it seeks a long-term replacement for Joël Matip. The Reds defender is likely to depart when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Liverpool's home shirt for the 2023/2024 campaign pays homage to Bill Shankly and the legendary Reds manager's final season in charge at Anfield. The Nike shirt features a bright red design with a bold white contrast on the colour and cuffs.

But it appears there will be competition for the teenager's services with The Mirror reporting that Newcastle is eyeing two additions in central defense this summer. Both Sven Botman and Jamal Lascelles are expected to be missing for lengthy periods due to serious knee injuries.

Borussia Dortmund is also said to be keen on Huijsen, who would likely cost around $31m (£25m/€29m). The report also states that Newcastle is keeping tabs on Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly, who are both out of contract this summer, and have also been linked with Liverpool.

Liverpool.com says: The Reds are likely to seek at least one defensive reinforcement this summer. Huijsen is set for a very bright future and despite being just 19, has impressed at Roma this season. If he is available, there will be plenty of competition with Newcastle also seeking additions.

Man Utd 'approaches Thomas Tuchel'

Manchester United is reportedly considering Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel as its next manager. Erik ten Hag faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's recent investment, with his side set to miss out on the top four this season.

United scraped past Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday but speculation continues that Ten Hag could be sacked this summer. According to Kicker reporter Georg Holzner, Tuchel has emerged as a possible successor.

Bayern announced Tuchel will step down at the end of the season back in February but the Bundesliga side is still seeking a replacement. Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann have both been targets but will remain in their current roles for the foreseeable.

It had been claimed that Tuchel could now stay on but Holzner suggests that is unlikely with United having reportedly already made an approach for the ex-Chelsea man.

Liverpool.com says: There is going to be a lot of managerial movement this summer, with Liverpool also still on the lookout for Jürgen Klopp's replacement. Jamie Carragher suggested last week that Tuchel could be a decent option but it appears United is eyeing him too. Ten Hag can have no real complaints if he is to depart after a disappointing season.
