A win against Newcastle United when Premier League action resumes on January 13 would see Manchester City record their third straight league win after a tricky period in the league for the Blues.

Top-flight action halts next weekend as Pep Guardiola’s attention turns to defending the FA Cup. Championship strugglers Huddersfield Town travel to the Etihad and after that the league fixtures appear to make kinder viewing for the champions.

City are aiming to exert revenge on Newcastle after tasting Carabao Cup defeat at St James’ Park in September. Should they do that, an opportunity opens up to gain ground on the leading pack.

Clashes against Burnley, Brentford, Everton and Chelsea, with three of those four games at home, look favourable. The next six Premier League games are rounded off with a trip to Bournemouth, a club City have never lost to.

February 5, when City travel to Brentford, holds added importance as title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool go head-to-head a day earlier. Guardiola has made relentless winning streaks in the second half of the campaign his specialty since taking charge - and he is aiming to do the same again.

As far as Arsenal are concerned, they take on two more London rivals after their shock defeat to West Ham United in midweek. The clash against Liverpool is the standout test for Mikel Arteta’s side but they also travel to the Hammers for the reverse fixture a week later on February 11.

Liverpool face Newcastle and Chelsea - both at home - in their next six games as well as the trip to Arsenal. Away from the league, they also have the Carabao Cup to contend with, a competition City and the Gunners exited early.
