Chelsea v Manchester City: The best wins

Our next home match on November 16 will see Sonia Bompastor's side play in SW6 in the league for the first time this season, having played there once already this term in a 3-2 win against Real Madrid in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

And not only is this our first WSL match at the Bridge this season, it will be a maiden meeting between Chelsea and Manchester City at our stadium.

It is sure to be an entertaining encounter under the lights when last term's top-two battle for the three points.

Manchester City ran the Blues incredibly close last season. With the two sides level on points going into the final day of the campaign, a fifth consecutive title was won by Chelsea following a stunning 6-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford which bolstered our goal difference.

The two sides have met a total of 20 times in the Women's Super League, with both clubs having won six games each and with the other eight matches ending in draws. Chelsea have scored 27 goals, while City have netted 25 - it could hardly be any closer!

Ahead of next month's meeting with City at the Bridge, we have taken a look back at some of our best wins across all competitions against our upcoming opponents...

Our most recent encounter with City came in last season's League Cup semi-final. With a place in the final at stake, the two sides clashed at the Joie Stadium in March of this year.

The hosts came into the match off the back of 12 consecutive victories, but there was not to be a 13th as Lauren James fittingly netted her 13th goal of the season inside the opening ten minutes, which proved to be the match-winning goal.

The move started with Erin Cuthbert, who skippered the Blues for the occasion, won back possession and set Mayra Ramirez off on the attack. The Colombian striker found our No.10, whose shot found the back of the net with the help of a slight deflection.

Chelsea were on top throughout the first half and dealt with whatever was thrown their way after the interval. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was kept busy and made a number of stops to deny the likes of Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp to guarantee our progression to the competition's showpiece event.

In front of what was then a record crowd for a Women's FA Cup final, more than 49,000 fans watched on as the Blues beat Manchester City in an action-packed contest to lift the domestic trophy for the fourth time.

It was a final of the two most dominant sides in the competition in recent times with the FA Cup having been won by either City or Chelsea in the five finals prior to the 2021/22 season.

May 15 2022 proved to be the Blues' day as we added another FA Cup trophy to the cabinet, having won the WSL the week before the Wembley showdown.

It was only right that Sam Kerr opened the scoring in the final. She tapped the ball home from barely a yard out, scoring in her fourth domestic cup final. And that wasn't to be her only goal of the match, but we'll get on to that below!

The score was level at half-time, with Hemp equalising for City, but just after the hour mark we went in front again thanks to a Cuthbert wonder strike. Our Scottish midfielder unleashed a powerful effort from 25 yards out, a goal worthy of the occasion.

There were still more goals to come as Hayley Raso made it 2-2 in the 89th minute and we headed to extra time at the national stadium.

But we had an Australian international of our own who had something to say about that! Almost 10 minutes into extra-time, Kerr scored her second of the day and the match-winner with a superb solo effort. Having played 99 minutes of football, our striker showed no sign of tiredness as she carried the ball from inside Chelsea's half and struck a shot which was deflected beyond City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck. 3-2!

This win over Manchester City secured a fourth domestic double for the Blues and a second in succession.

A clinical display from those in Chelsea blue helped record an impressive 4-0 victory against Manchester City in the Women's Super League back in November 2021.

The fixture took place on the third annual Women's Football Weekend, which aims to celebrate the talented players across the top-flight to grassroots level, and the Blues certainly did not disappoint.

A 4-0 win ensured all three points came back to London. It was the first time that Chelsea had beaten City on their home turf in a WSL match. And what a way we did it!

The scoring got underway not long after kick-off with Jessie Fleming netting inside the opening two minutes. She capitalised on a mistake from the City goalkeeper and found the back of the net with a simple finish.

It was 2-0 at the interval with who else but Kerr scoring our second of the day, this time with a tap-in. A quickfire double early in the second half from Fran Kirby, who scored her 98th goal for Chelsea, and captain Magdalena Eriksson put the game out of City's reach with 35 minutes still to be played.

This was a spectacular win from the Blues and it remains our biggest margin of victory against Manchester City.
