On come Rashford, Eriksen and Martinez, with Van Nistelrooy clearly keen to strengthen as his team’s second-half dip begins to set in. Garnacho, Ugarte and Dalot head off.

PAOK should be level as Tissoudali is picked out in acres of space in the middle of the box. He has time to take a touch before shooting, but his effort is straight at Onana. What a chance!
Garnacho weaves into the box and goes down as he goes to shoot. There are huge appeals for a penalty, but replays show that it was the United player who kicked the defender, and a spot-kick would have been harsh. VAR agrees.

Tissoudali is shown a yellow for denying Onana the chance to distribute the ball quickly.

Ugarte ends up wrong side as he chases back, committing a foul and picking up a booking.

PAOK could be level, but Zivkovic drags his effort wide when well placed just inside the area.

GOAL! MAN UTD 1-0 PAOK (AMAD)
He was one of the liveliest players in the first half and Amad puts United 1-0 up, drifting on to a lovely cross from Fernandes and looping a lovely header back across goal and picking out the far corner. Was he looking to assist an onrushing teammate? It doesn’t matter, the goal is his. 1-0.

HALF-TIME: ALL SQUARE AT THE INTERVAL
Fernandes pulls out all the tricks to put pressure on just before the break, but Amad leaves his cutback hoping for a better placed teammate and there’s nobody there. That’s the end of the action, it’s goalless at the break.
Casemiro is enjoying himself tonight in a slightly more free role in midfield, and he combines well with Fernandes, with only the final pass being the problem, as it evades the Brazilian’s run into the box.
Camara controls the ball on the turn on the edge of the box and it drops beautifully for him to hit on the half-volley, forcing Onana to tip his decent effort over the bar.
This is much better from United than we’ve seen from them much of the time in recent months. There’s control in midfield, and threat on the wings, and that is shown again as Casemiro links with Fernandes to play Amad in. His cutback is underhit, but again it’s promising.
WONDERFUL DEFENDING DENIES UNITED
Garnacho bends a beautiful ball across the face of the goal, but a perfectly covering clearance denies the waiting Amad a golden chance. The resulting corner is cleared to safety.
Onana makes a comfortable save after Zivkovic darts in onto his left foot and thunders one towards goal. There was a lot behind that, but the United keeper saw it all the way.
Fernandes plays a wonderful through-ball to pick out the run of Casemiro, but the covering defender does superbly to rob him of the ball. The fans scream for a penalty, but the players don’t which tells you all you need to know. Robbie Savage on commentary on TNT Sports is similarly “not convinced”.
United are looking pretty dangerous when Amad and Garnacho are involved out wide, but a few times now they’ve struggled to connect with overlapping full-backs. The understanding and cohesion isn’t there yet, but it’s reasonably encouraging.
Amad whips in a terrific cross from deep that Hojlund turns goalward. The defending was good, putting the forward off, and it’s a comfortable save in the end. But the signs are good for United.
