Liverpool laid down a huge marker in their quest for a first Premier League title in five seasons, with a 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield. It is a seismic result that sees them extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points, and they are now 11 points ahead of Man City.

This game was an absolute battering. Liverpool attempted 18 shots to City’s eight; that’s the most shots City have conceded in a game this season, and the first time they have faced more attempts than they’ve taken in 2024-25.

Those shots were worth 3.35 expected goals for Liverpool. It’s just the second time in recorded Premier League history that City have conceded 3+ xG in a game.

Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the first half. The Dutchman stole around the back post to tap in a pinpoint cross from Mohamed Salah, who’d found himself in acres of space down the right.

Salah made it 2-0 in the second half, converting a penalty after Luis Díaz had been felled in the box by Stefan Ortega. That penalty came from a horrible mix up in City’s back line, and their defensive frailty was on display all afternoon. It was a minor miracle this game only ended 2-0.

Liverpool could and should have been out of sight in the first half. Virgil van Dijk had a couple of excellent headed chances in particular that he would have expected to score. Before eventually scoring his penalty, Salah also had a great chance, but somehow managed to sky a clear one-on-one with the goal at his mercy.

City have won eight Premier League titles in total and six of them after overcoming at least an 8-point deficit to the leaders. They have shown in the past they are capable of overhauling significant gaps. But this time feels so much different.
