Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Mohamed Salah moved past Steven Gerrard in the all-time Liverpool goalscorers list, as he helped his side to an entertaining 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

It was a game that had a bit of everything, an early lead for Bournemouth, a record-breaking goal, a red card and potentially a new star - Dominik Szoboszlai - announcing his status to Anfield.

Bournemouth twice had the ball in the Liverpool net in the opening three minutes, both due to Trent Alexander-Arnold mistakes as the full-back made his 200th Premier League appearance.

After Jaidon Anthony’s early finish was ruled out for offside, Liverpool ignored the warning signs and allowed Anthoine Semenyo to finish with a powerful drive to Alisson’s right.

It took Liverpool half an hour to wake up but they hit two in nine minutes thanks to Salah and an acrobatic finish from Luis Diaz.

The home side never looked back from there, despite Alexis Mac Allister’s red card for an aggressive tackle on Ryan Christie - Diogo Jota reached Szoboszlai’s rebound to finish the encounter after the Hungarian had a fantastic game in midfield.

Bournemouth came out the blocks much quicker and after Alexander-Arnold played the ball past Allison for Anthony’s disallowed opening effort, Liverpool didn’t learn their lesson.

The full-back would go off with an ankle injury later on, and was robbed in midfield in the lead-up to Bournemouth’s goal, allowing Semenyo plenty of time and space to score.

But it was all downhill from there for the visitors. Liverpool began getting a foothold in the game just before the half-hour mark and Diaz scored with an audacious finish, flicking a rolled cross up with his right foot before finishing over his head to give Neto no chance in the Bournemouth goal.

And with Liverpool pouring forward it wasn’t long before they hit their second - Szoboszlai making the most of slight contact with Joe Rothwell to earn a penalty that Neto initially reached, before Salah speared in the record-breaking rebound.

Bournemouth rode their luck to finish the first-half just a goal down, and Andoni Iraola’s team talk couldn’t turn the tide. With Cody Gakpo and Jota going close ahead of the hour mark, the Portuguese forward provided the perfect reaction to Mac Allister’s red card by pouncing on the rebound of Szoboszlai’s deflected shot to score and end the contest.

Waturo Endo got his first minutes for Liverpool but had a pretty quiet game in truth, while Hamed Traore was the standout player off the bench but couldn’t get the visitors another goal.

Talking point: Salah struggles, Szoboszlai stars as Liverpool cut loose

Salah cut a frustrated figure leaving the field a week ago at Stamford Bridge and he’ll be disappointed not to have scored his first goal of the season from open play - not that people will remember that when looking back at the goal that took Salah past Gerrard. But he looked a touch off the pace for most of the Anfield afternoon, and was outshone by Diaz and Jota in the front three.

Salah had several chances outside of the penalty, including a one-on-one with Neto that he side-footed straight at the goalkeeper, but behind him Szoboszlai had a standout game. He grew and grew into the contest, making driving runs around the edge of the area and constantly picking the right option whether it was a perfectly-placed pass to a team-mate or taking several well-aimed shots from distance.

The Hungarian had a major hand in two of Liverpool’s three goals and looks to be a fantastic addition to their engine room aged just 22.

Mac Allister’s red card notwithstanding, Liverpool had a much tidier game in midfield after struggling to gel at Stamford Bridge, though Gakpo could come under more pressure from Endo going forward after a quiet game for the Dutchman.

Player of the match: Luis Diaz

Truth be told, that finish was deserving of this award all by itself. Receiving the ball surrounded by three Bournemouth defenders, Diaz made the goal look like the easiest thing in the world despite starting with his back to goal.

Neto - who had a good game - was powerless to stop it and Diaz earned a standing ovation when he was replaced late on. But it wasn’t all about the goal. Salah looked at his best when interplaying with Diaz on the flanks around the penalty area.

Match highlights

2’ - GOAL BOURNEMOUTH - but disallowed: What a start! Jaidon Anthony has the ball in the net for Bournemouth but it's been correctly ruled out for offside. Anthony stole around the back of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson clumsily rushed out only for Anthony to place it past him. Liverpool just stopped there, they need to focus.

3’ - GOAL!!! Liverpool 0-1 Bournemouth: Whatever Jurgen Klopp's pre-match team talk was, it didn't work. Trent Alexander-Arnold was beaten to a pass in midfield and the ball broke to Dominic Solanke, who laid it off to Anthoine Semenyo whose powerful shot to Alisson's right gave the Brazilian no chance.

27’ - GOAL!!! Liverpool 1-1 Bournemouth: Luis Diaz equalises for Liverpool with a fantastic finish! He recieved a rolling pass from Diogo Jota in the box and flicked it up before finishing with an acrobatic volley that was almost an overhead kick. Game on!

35’ - Penalty Liverpool: Dominik Szoboszlai has earned his side a penalty! Really it looked like he bought it, Joe Rothwell sticked a foot in but didn't appear to make contact, certainly not enough to send the Hungarian down so acrobatically.

36’ - GOAL!!! Liverpool 2-1 Bournemouth: Salah's effort was initially saved by Neto diving to his left, but the Egyptian made no mistake with the rebound to put his side ahead.

45’ - Great save by Neto! Liverpool's midfield is dominating right now, this time Alexis MacAllister and Cody Gakpo combine to give Trent Alexander-Arnold a free shot in the area, but Neto got down well to his left. Virgil van Dijk has a free header from the resulting corner but it flies just wide.

58’ - RED CARD FOR LIVERPOOL!!! Alexis MacAllister has been sent off the an inocuous-looking challenge on Ryan Christie. Both were going for the ball but MacAllister got there second, and with his foot hanging high with the studs out his game's ending early.

62’ - GOAL!!! Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth: Maybe they should play with a man down more often. It's an immediate reaction for Liverpool, Neto could only parry Dominik Szoboszlai's deflected shot and Diogo Jota pounced on the rebound to score.
