Orlando Pirates Confirm Early Release of Lesedi Kapinga's Contract ...

By Mpho Moloi

Orlando Pirates Football Club has announced the early termination of their contract with Lesedi Kapinga. This mutual decision was revealed in a statement on 17 September 2024, where both parties expressed their agreement to part ways amicably. Kapinga, who joined the Buccaneers ahead of the 2023/24 season, departs after a season of limited opportunities.

Orlando Pirates confirmed the decision by stating: “Both parties have agreed to amicably part ways following a meeting earlier today. On behalf of the extended Orlando Pirates family, we would like to thank Lesedi for his time at the Club and wish him all the best for the future.”

A Challenging Season for Kapinga

Kapinga, a talented midfielder with notable past performances, struggled to find a consistent role within the Pirates’ squad. Despite the initial excitement around his signing, Kapinga made just 13 appearances for the club in all competitions, with only two starts during the 2023/24 season. His lack of regular playing time was largely due to the fierce competition for midfield spots under coach Jose Riveiro, with players like Patrick Maswanganyi, Karim Kimvuidi, and Kabelo Dlamini often preferred .

His tenure at Orlando Pirates followed a similar pattern to his time at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he also faced challenges in securing consistent minutes on the field. During his three-year stint at Sundowns, he made 39 appearances, contributing four goals and seven assists. However, his most productive spell remains his time with Black Leopards, where he featured in 51 games and registered seven goals and eight assists .

Future Prospects for Kapinga

While Kapinga’s departure from Orlando Pirates is confirmed, speculation remains about his next move. With the South African transfer window still open until 20 September 2024, there is a possibility that the 29-year-old may find a new home before the deadline. Clubs such as AmaZulu FC, Sekhukhune United, and SuperSport United have been previously linked with interest in the midfielder, raising hopes that he may soon reignite his career elsewhere .

Orlando Pirates’ decision to part ways with Kapinga reflects the club’s broader strategy to streamline the squad ahead of a crucial period, both domestically and in continental competitions. For Kapinga, this marks the end of another chapter in his career, as he seeks a fresh opportunity to rediscover the form that made him a standout player during his earlier years.

As the football world awaits news on his next destination, Kapinga’s journey continues, with many fans hopeful that he will soon have the chance to showcase his talent once more.
