Leicester City v Aston Villa live match updates

Transfer deadline day has been and gone and so Leicester City now know the squad they will be working with for the first half of the Premier League campaign. And one of their latest signings could be in the starting line-up against Aston Villa this afternoon (3pm kick-off).

City thankfully sorted the £20m deal for Bilal El Khannouss before the drama of deadline day, and so he is eligible to make his debut for the club. But will he come into the starting line-up or will Facundo Buonanotte retain his spot in attacking midfield?

Whoever starts, City will need them to be at their best if they are to make the most of limited chances they may get against Villa, who have become an excellent outfit under Unai Emery. But if they can produce a performance like the second half against Spurs, then they have a chance at claiming their first Premier League win of the season.

We are live at the King Power Stadium to bring you updates, analysis, and reaction. Kick-off is at 3pm with team news expected around 1.45pm.

El Khannouss among three subs

City are going for it now, and they have to.

El Khannouss is on for his debut, with Buonanotte and Mavididi also on.

Going off are Ayew, Skipp, and Fatawu. It looks like Buonanotte will play on the right with El Khannouss in the middle.

Goal. Duran heads in

And City are really up against it now.

It's a simple one-two on the Villa left and Digne swings in a cross. Duran, who has just come on for Watkins, gets half a yard of space by stepping away from Okoli, and meets the ball before lofting a header over Hermansen.

Here come the City changes.

Controversy as Vardy puts the ball in the net

Winks plays a ball forward and it takes a nick of referee David Coote's heel.

Skipp runs through and passes to Vardy who sticks the ball in the net. The whistle had already gone and the Villa players had stopped, but City are very annoyed at Coote and so are the fans.

Okoli has a go

He wasn't brought into the team to be an attacking threat, but he's having City chances right now.

The Italian comes forward and tries his luck from 25 yards, and it's not too far over.

The noise is building here.

55 minJordan Blackwell

Scrappy game

Possession is bouncing back and forth with both teams doing a pretty poor job of keeping hold of it.

City are having chances to build attacks, but they're not able to keep the ball. Ndidi has been particularly guilty.

A lot of stoppages

We've played six-and-a-half minutes of this second half and I'd guess 30 seonds of it has been with the ball in play. We've had a lot of stoppages, mostly for an injury to Onana.

Back up and running

No changes for City.

Half-time: City 0-1 Villa

Honestly, that's probably better than the first halves against Spurs and Fulham. City have kept and moved the ball better, getting themselves higher up the pitch, and so they have done less defending.

But still, they trail. And most of the good chances have gone Villa's way, with Hermansen needing to make two excellent interventions.

City finally made themselves in the final five minutes of the half and went close through Okoli.

44 minJordan Blackwell

Better again from City

Skipp finds Vardy's run, the first time the number nine has been picked out today, and he keeps the ball away from Bogarde to wait for support.

He lays it back to Skipp who shoots from 20 yards, but it's comfortable for Martinez to save.

41 minJordan Blackwell

Big chance for Okoli!

That's City's best chance and the centre-back should probably do better.

Winks dinks in a free-kick and Okoli is the only one who reads it, getting between the Villa players. But he tries to control the ball rather than get a shot away, only the touch off his stomach is poor.

Still, the heavy touch does divert the ball goalwards and Martinez has to claw it away to stop it ending up in the corner of the net.

Hermansen saves again

It's too easy for Tielemans to pick these balls through the lines for Villa. He threads one through Winks and Skipp to Ramsey, and he runs at the City defence with nobody closing him down.

From the edge of the box, he shoots, and Hermansen parries away.

28 minKEY EVENT

Goal. Villa lead through Onana

That's a brilliantly-worked free-kick. It's completely caught City out.

Tielemans takes it, playing a simple pass between the ball and a crowd of players, to find Ramsey's run. He's completely unmarked is the Villa academy graduate. Somebody's not tracked him.

In acres of space in the box, Ramsey squares and Onana is one of those running in, the Belgian sliding in to score.

It's a very clever move, but City were completely dumbfounded by it.

26 minJordan Blackwell

Game more open

Villa have putting more pressure on in the past few minutes, but that's also opened up the space for City to attack.

There was one scary moment at the back for City as Okoli took a goal kick to Hermansen when he wasn't ready, and he miscontrolled, barely keeping the ball away from Watkins as he dived in.

Now Skipp has been booked for bringing down Watkins.

21 minJordan Blackwell

Superb save by Hermansen!

That is brilliant.

Faes makes a huge error, taking far too long looking for the big switch, and it's charged down by Rogers, who then pokes it through Okoli's legs to set up Watkins.

He's one on one and goes for the bottom corner, but Hermansen sticks out a big right hand to save.

Justin possibly gets lucky that Watkins got the shot off, because he shoved the Villa striker in the back and that may have led to a penalty shout.

20 minJordan Blackwell

Can't lose it there

Fatawu tries to beat Digne but loses the ball in City's half and Villa sprint forward. They work it from left to right and the move ends with McGinn bending a shot a couple of yards wide.

16 minJordan Blackwell

Ramsey on for Bailey

Bailey went down in the City half a few minutes ago and he cannot continue. Ramsey replaces him on the Villa right in an early sub.

13 minJordan Blackwell

Definitely a better start

Compared to how City started against Spurs and Fulham, this has been loads better. That moment for Watkins when he tried to round Hermansen remains the only chance of the game so far.

City haven't exactly been an attacking threat, but they're working the ball out of defence with more composure, keeping the ball for longer, and so not having to do so much defending.

7 minJordan Blackwell

City targeting Tielemans

Early signs are that City are pressing Tielemans strongly, trying to pinch the ball of the Belgian.

Ndidi is the most advanced of the midfielders, so that's his job mostly, but Winks has just dashed forward to take the ball from him.

Villa have had more of the ball in the past few minutes, but when City do win it, they're telling each other to calm down, and perhaps not give up possession so cheaply.

2 minJordan Blackwell

Hermansen denies Watkins

That's great goalkeeping. City kept the ball for most of the first 90 seconds but the moment they lost it, Tielemans threaded a ball through the middle of Faes and Okoli and Watkins was in.

He tried to dribble around Hermansen, but the City keeper got a hand to the ball and pushed it away before Watkins knee hit the Dane on the head to draw a free-kick. He's up and okay.

Kick-off!

We are under way! C'mon City!

14:59Jordan Blackwell

Here we go

The teams have been introduced to the crowd and to each other, with big hugs from Vardy, Faes, and Ndidi for Tielemans.

Kick-off is just around the corner.

14:55Jordan Blackwell

Test for Okoli

Okoli for Vestergaard is perhaps the most interesting of the City changes. Could Watkins and Rogers' pace be a consideration there? We'll ask Cooper after the match.

The new signing didn't have a lot of defending to do on his debut in the week, so he's not been put under pressure in a competitive game yet, but this is a real test.

And so often, a successful defence is about the communication between centre-backs. Him and Faes need to form a partnership quickly.

Loanees thrown straight in

One of the big positives of City's window was the number of players they got out on loan, giving them opportunities for minutes and to develop their games.

It can be a tricky balancing act with loans. You want players to start, but you also want them in a league that challenges their ability and forces them to improve.

But the good news is that many of those that left this week have been thrown straight in. Cover started for Port Vale in their 3-2 loss to Doncaster today, while Braybrooke and Popov are in the starting line-ups for Dundee and Barrow respectively. Richards is on the bench for Exeter.

Tielemans starts for Villa

The Belgian midfielder make his first return to City this afternoon and is in the Villa starting line-up. As are dangermen Watkins and Rodgers.

Team news - Okoli, Skipp, and Ayew in

Caleb Okoli, Oli Skipp, and Jordan Ayew have all been handed their first Leicester City league starts against Aston Villa as Steve Cooper makes three changes from the side that lost to Fulham.

Okoli, who made his club debut in the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Tranmere, comes into the back-line in place of Jannik Vestergaard. That means the £15m summer signing, who received his first senior Italy call-up yesterday, will partner Wout Faes at the heart of the defence.

In midfield, Skipp comes in for Facundo Buonanotte. That either means City will play with a flat midfield trio, Skipp fitting in alongside Wilfred Ndidi and Harry Winks, or it will mean Ndidi is being pushed into an attacking midfield role.

The final change sees Ayew start on the left wing, in place of Bobby De Cordova-Reid. The Ghanaian is preferred in the role to Stephy Mavididi, who started there against Tranmere.

With only three changes, it means James Justin and Victor Kristiansen continue at full-back, with Ricardo Pereira left on the bench again. While it also means there’s no place in the 11 for new signing Bilal El Khannouss, who is among the substitutes.

City (4-2-3-1): Hermansen; Justin, Faes, Okoli, Kristiansen; Winks, Skipp; Fatawu, Ndidi, Ayew; Vardy. Subs: Iversen, Ricardo, Vestergaard, Soumare, Buonanotte, El Khannouss, De Cordova-Reid, McAteer, Mavididi.

Edouard's here

But he won't be in the squad. We'll find out who is in a couple of minutes.

13:04Jordan Blackwell

How City could line up today

El Khannouss is available to be selected for City today, but it feels slightly too premature for him to come in for his first start. We're predicting the £20m man will be on the bench. Edouard signed too late to feature.

So could there be any changes from last week at Fulham? We're expecting Skipp to come into the side. But will it be a straight swap for Ndidi? Or will it be for Buonanotte, with Ndidi pushing forward into the number 10 role?

Fans have been calling for Ricardo and Mavididi to come into the team, but we're expecting Justin and De Cordova-Reid to keep their spots.

Predicted line-up: Hermansen; Justin, Vestergaard, Faes, Kristiansen; Skipp, Winks; Fatawu, Ndidi, De Cordova-Reid, Vardy.
