La Liga is planning to take a December fixture between two of its biggest clubs - FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid - to the United States according to Relevo, which cited anonymous sources.

The Spanish top flight's President Javier Tebas tried to pull off a similar stunt for a Girona-Barca meeting in January 2019 but met opposition from the players' union and then-Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales while also facing fan anger.

There was another failed attempt with a Villarreal-Atleti match on December 8 of that year. Yet on November 15, a court in Madrid blocked a La Liga match from taking place abroad by reminding it that its actions should be co-ordinated with the RFEF.

With Rubiales now out of the way, Tebas is starting up plans for what would be a first in the league's 95-year history.

Relevo reveals that the La Liga chief wants to take a Matchday 18 tie between Barcelona and Atleti to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with the action scheduled for some time between December 20 and 22.

The Spanish outlet adds that both Barca and Atleti are in favour of the proposal made by Tebas, which would result in a considerable cash injection for all parties involved.

With Barca hoping to return to the newly-renovated Camp Nou in the first quarter of 2025, the match, if going on the road, would be one less in Montjuic Stadium which has been the Catalans' temporary home since the start of last season.

Tebas has more ideas up his sleeve, with Barca and Atleti two Spanish giants he wants to play a friendly tournament also involving foreign clubs in Abu Dhabi at the start of January 2025.

This could again cause friction with the RFEF given that the Spanish Super Cup usually takes place in Saudi Arabia around the same time meaning there could be scheduling conflicts.

While Atleti haven't qualified this time round, the four teams invited for the semi final and final competition will be Real Madrid, Barca, Athletic Club and Mallorca.

The players' union might again have something to say about piling extra games on Barca and Atleti's stars at a time when their Real Madrid counterparts could play over 70 matches this term with the seven competitions they'll contest.
