DDC Preview: Kaizer Chiefs - Orlando Pirates FC
The Soweto Derby takes centre stage in this weekend’s DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) action as Orlando Pirates Reserves do battle with their Kaizer Chiefs counterparts on Sunday afternoon. Dobsonville Stadium hosts this exciting clash between the two giants as the upcoming generation of stars get a taste of the country’s biggest rivalry.
It’s a fitting show-stopper to this month’s festival, closing out the 12th week of this season’s Reserve League action. The Buccaneers are billed as the away team in what is expected to be an intense battle featuring the two most iconic names in South African football.
Head-to-Head
The Derby follows a week of mixed results for the two rivals, who both occupy spots in the top half of the DDC table. Chiefs were the happier of the two after putting on a commanding display on the road against Cape Town City to emerge with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
That result took them up to second place in the standings, level on points with the table topping Stellenbosch with a game in hand. It was also their third win on the trot and a continuation of an impressive run that has seen them go unbeaten in their last six fixtures where they have won four and drawn the other two.
They now host a Pirates side that has endured a mixed bag of results over the same period, winning just half of their last six games while losing once and playing to two stalemates. Their most recent draw came in their last outing where they had to share the spoils with Richards Bay at home, with the game finishing with the two sides level at 1-1.
Due to the dropped points, the young Buccaneers went from fifth place to seventh in the DDC table. They are however within touching distance of top spot, with only four points keeping them from the summit.
Three more against their fiercest rivals will put them even closer, but they will face a stiff challenge against an in-form side also eyeing the top.
Head-to-Head
Chiefs secured bragging rights from the last Soweto Derby, courtesy of two unanswered goals which sealed a 2-0 victory. This helped them finish the season unbeaten against their rivals after a 1-1 draw in their earlier fixture where Mehluleli Maphumulo’s opening goal was cancelled out by Donay Jansen.
Prior to that, Pirates had enjoyed a dominant spell in the fixture, completing a league double in the 2022/23 campaign. They still maintain a slight upper hand despite the recent results, having won three of the last seven derbies with two defeats and two draws.
