Joshlin's mother, Kelly Smith, appeared in court alongside her boyfriend, Jacquen Appolis, and co-accused Steveno van Rhyn and Lourentia Lombaard.

State advocate Aradhana Heeramun told the court that the investigation was ongoing.

"All info being retrieved by SAPS [is] being followed up. Forensic reports have been received and cellphone data has been downloaded.

"The State is in the process of analysing data. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the State will be in better position to indicate the status of investigation" Heeramun said.

Security was tight outside the court on Monday.

More than 70 days have passed since the Grade 1 pupil vanished outside her Middelpos home. Her mother and the co-accused have been charged with kidnapping and human trafficking.

Outside of court on Monday morning, a handful of supporters waited in anticipation for the court proceedings to start.

One resident, Miche Adonis, said she hoped the accused would not be released before they told the court where Joshlin was.

"They must just tell us where the child is. It's been months and that little girl is still missing. This is unacceptable. What mother would do this to their child?" she asked.

Another resident, Shamiela Titus, said she had taken time off work to show support at the court.

"We are here to stand with the community to make our voices heard and [to ensure] that this issue does not disappear. It could have been anyone's child. My heart is breaking for Joshlin; she doesn't deserve this," Titus said.

Security guards and a handful of public order police kept a watchful eye at the entrance to the court.

A Patriotic Alliance van was also seen outside the building and several party supporters were inside.
