Taylor Fritz opened up on his prospects of facing World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals 2024 in Turin. On Sunday, November 17, Sinner will be looking to make amends after he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final last year. Fritz, on the other hand, will be aiming to avenge his loss to Sinner in the final of the US Open earlier this year.
Fritz started his campaign in Turin after beating Daniil Medvedev, after which he lost to Sinner. But he made a comeback to beat Alex de Minaur in the last match of the round-robin stage to secure his berth in the semis. In the semis, Fritz took down the might of Alexander Zverev.
“The US Open felt like I was kind of just trying to keep myself in with my serve, stay alive, win points by hitting big shots or playing off of his errors. Kind of just like not repeatable, consistent ways to win points,” Fritz said, as quoted by ATP.
“The match we played hereâæ. I felt much more comfortable from the baseline. I had my chances in that match. I had chances to break him in both sets. He had an equal amount of chances, and he took his. He played the big points better than I did in the group stage match,” Fritz added.
Sinner, on the other hand, won all three matches in the Ilie Nastase Group and topped the points table. In the semi-final, the Italian star eased past Casper Ruud in straight sets.
Sinner and Fritz have faced each other four times on the ATP tour thus far since their first meeting in the Indian Wells back in 2021. Even as Fritz came up trumps in their first meeting, Sinner has won three matches in a row.
