Arsenal hopes of a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League league phase were dented with a 1-0 defeat to reigning Serie A champions Internazionale. This loss leaves Arsenal on seven points after four games in the competition and 12th in the competition standings.
The only goal of the game arrived via the penalty spot in the third minute of first-half added time. Mikel Merino was adjudged to have handled in the area, and Turkish midfielder Hakan Çalhanoglu made no mistake from the spot.

Arsenal grew into the game and were by far the more dangerous side in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past a stubborn Inter defence. One positive for the Gunners was the return of influential midfielder Martin Ødegaard, who came on as a late substitute to make his first competitive appearance for the club since 31 August.
For Arsenal, that’s now three defeats in their last six competitive matches, following losses away at Bournemouth and Newcastle. Just like in those two defeats, they failed to score, which will be a worry ahead of a difficult London derby at Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League.
