Inter Milan's Serie A encounter with Fiorentina was abandoned after Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina midfielder, collapsed on the pitch.

The Italian, on loan from fellow Serie A side AS Roma, fell to the turf suddenly on 16 minutes.

He was treated quickly after players from both sides signalled for medical attention.

The 22-year-old was stretchered off the field and put into an ambulance to be taken to hospital, where he is in intensive care.

The game was goalless between the third- and fourth-placed teams in the Italian top tier.

Fiorentina released a statement stating that Bove was "currently under pharmacological sedation and hospitalised in intensive care", and that he would be assessed tomorrow.

"He arrived at the emergency room in stable hemodynamic conditions and the first cardiological and neurological tests performed have ruled out acute damage to the central nervous system and the cardio-respiratory system," the statement read.

Meanwhile, both the presidents of Inter Milan and Fiorentina have issued statements of their own.

Rocco Commisso, of Fiorentina, said: "Forza Edoardo, we’re with you. You’re a strong boy with a great character. We’re reaching out to his family during these moments."

Giuseppe Marotta, the president of Inter Milan, told Sky Italia: "Inter and the entire football world express their closeness to Bove's family and Fiorentina.

"The decision to postpone the match was spontaneous on everyone's part, we are a community, all the players and even the referee were emotionally involved. We hope it is nothing serious."

Bove's team-mates and colleagues have also posted messages of support for the midfielder, with David de Gea, the former Manchester United and current Fiorentina goalkeeper tweeting: "God please".

Roma posted: "One of us, we are all with you." The official Serie A account added: "Forza Edoardo. We're all with you."

Bove was playing in his 12th league game in Fiorentina colours since his move from Roma in the summer.

Bove has a clause in his loan deal that La Viola can trigger to turn the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

The midfielder currently has one goal and three assists to his name in Serie A this term.
