IND 89/3 IN 24 OVERS
Rohit Sharma gets to his fifty at last, with a brace off Wood. He was in the nervous forties for a while but finally notches up his 54th ODI fifty. Rohit follows it up with a casual pick-up shot for six over deep backward-square. Eight off the over.
IND 81/3 IN 23 OVERS
Bowling change. Livingstone replaces Rashid. He starts with a maiden as well.
IND 81/3 IN 22 OVERS
Wood plugging away with some quiet overs here - only three from it in the end. Can Rohit and Rahul turn this into a match-defining stand?
Rohit Sharma scales Mt. 18k
IND vs ENG: Rohit reached the mark with a boundary off Adil Rashid.
IND 78/3 IN 21 OVERS
Rashid into his sixth. Rohit employs the sweep and gets a boundary off the third ball. With that shot, Rohit completes 18,000 international runs! Five runs from the over.
IND 73/3 IN 20 OVERS
Wood’s on. Buttler needs to get some overs out of Livingstone and Moeen as well. That could be India’s chance to counter attack. For now, tidy from Wood. Just three from it.
IND 70/3 IN 19 OVERS
Rashid continues. Three singles from Rash’s fifth. Rebuilding mode on in Lucknow.
How have Rohit' men fared while defending totals
In the last 24 months, India has batted first on 22 occassions and won 16 matches.
IND 67/3 IN 18 OVERS
Wood’s extra pace allowing KL to collect four. Wood induces the outside edge that races away to the third-man fence. One of the rare occasions when there wasn’t a fielder at slip and KL benefits. Five off the over.
IND 62/3 IN 17 OVERS
Rohit Sharma plays a languid drive through covers for four. Rashid concedes his first boundary of the match. It was tossed up on off stump and Rohit obliges with a beautiful drive. Seven from the over.
RECORD ALERT FOR THE SKIPPER!
Rohit Sharma completes 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023 during IND vs ENG
IND 55/3 IN 16 OVERS
Wood comes into the attack. It’ll be interesting to see what lengths the Indian bowlers bowl on this wicket. Anything full hasn’t carried to the cordon. Meanwhile, Rohit has been adjudged lbw! He has reviewed it. That looked out live but an excellent review - ball missing leg stump and Rohit survives. Rohit celebrates the reprieve by executing a cracking cut shot for four. It was a poor follow-up delivery - short, wide and duly punished. Five from Wood’s eventful first over.
IND 50/3 IN 15 OVERS
Rashid continues. India’s fifty comes up with a single off the second ball. That’s also the only run from this over. India will be wary of the fact that they have a long tail in the absence of Hardik Pandya.
IND 49/3 IN 14 OVERS
Woakes bowling his seventh. Looks like a tricky wicket this. Anything close to 250 with this Indian bowling attack could be challenging. It was turning out to be yet another quiet over with just three singles coming off the first five. But Rohit decides to break the shackles by stepping out to Woakes, last ball, and smashing one over mid-on for four.

IND 42/3 IN 13 OVERS
Rashid continues. Two runs from it. Different kind of test for Rohit, who has been used to providing flying starts this World Cup.
IND 40/3 IN 12 OVERS
Woakes gets an extended spell. He has bowled superbly, mixing his lengths on a tacky wicket. The odd full delivery speared in between the short stuff causing problems. GONE! Iyer fails the litmus test - the Indian No. 4 has a proven weakness against the short ball. But this one’s just back of a length and Iyer gets into an awkward position trying to pull - miscues it to offer a simple chance. KL Rahul in next. Two slips for KL, one significantly ahead of the other. A run and a wicket.
IND 39/2 IN 11 OVERS
Good bowling change from Adil Rashid. Leggie into the attack early in the game. Tidy start from Rash - four singles from that over.
IND 35/2 IN 10 OVERS
Another excellent over from Woakes. Four coming off it. End of the first PowerPlay and a fruitful one at that for England.
IND 31/2 IN 9 OVERS
Willey into his fifth. Kohli and Rohit could add just a solitary run in 17 balls. That created the pressure. It’s all happening in Lucknow. Rohit survives a run-out chance at the non-striker’s end. Once again, sharp reflexes from England inside the 30-yard circle creating opportunities. Rohit survives, having been sent back by Shreyas Iyer for a risky single. Maiden again.
IND vs ENG: Virat Kohli registers first duck in ODI World Cup match
IND 31/2 IN 8 OVERS
This is a great opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to make a mark at 4. Team under pressure and he needs to stand up. Woakes and Willey have rarely erred in lengths so far. Just three from Woakes’s fourth over.
IND 28/2 IN 7 OVERS
Willey continues. England have been sharp in the field. Kohli’s cover drive that seemed destined for the ropes has been intercepted brilliantly by Malan. Kohli remains on nought. There’s the big one! The ploy has worked. Willey kept Kohli on strike, forcing him to try something different. Forces Kohli to use his feet and he mistimes one to be caught for a duck. What a start for the Three Lions! Shreyas Iyer in next.
IND 27/1 IN 6 OVERS
Chris Woakes had only taken two wickets in this competition before that Gill dismissal. But this has been a good comeback from him. He could’ve had another one but an outside edge off Rohit’s blade fell short of Root at first slip. Another sign of two-paced wicket. Rohit had a real go at that one and yet the edge fell short. Lucky escape for the Indian skipper. That would’ve been a great breakthrough. Maiden from Woakes!
IND 27/1 IN 5 OVERS
Good follow-up over from Willey. Already signs of this being a two-paced wicket. Just a single from it. Kohli yet to get off the mark.
IND 26/1 IN 4 OVERS
GONE! Woakes gets his first! Shubman Gill has been castled by an inswinger. Four runs and a wicket from it as Kohli makes his way to the middle. Beautiful delivery. The length was the key there - Woakes lured him into the drive, leaving a gap between bat and pad and the ball found it!
IND 22/0 IN 3 OVERS
Willey erring in lengths this over. Rohit Sharma, after seven dots, picks up a boundary. Shimmies down the track and lofts a shortish ball over mid-on for four. He follows it up with a majestic pull for six. Trademark Rohit. Meanwhile, the Lucknow crowd has come alive. Rohit sends the last ball down the ground for the second six of the over. First over maiden but 18 off Willey’s second!
IND 4/0 IN 2 OVERS
Woakes shares the new ball. Gill, on strike, with two slips in place. There is no pace on this surface. Not ideal for strokeplay. Batters have to take risks if they want to score quickly. Gill’s off the mark with a quality backfoot punch through cover for four. Willey offered neither width nor length in his first over. Woakes now needs to back it up. Decent start. Four from it.

IND vs ENG: Why is India wearing black armbands in World Cup 2023 match against England in Lucknow?
IND 0/0 IN 1 OVER
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill march out to the middle. Rohit will take strike. Slip in place for him. Left-arm pacer David Willey with the ball. Three dots to start off the innings. Rohit is waiting for the one that shapes back in. But for now, Willey’s wobble seam is taking the ball away from him. Excellent start from Willey - right on the money. Maiden to start the proceedings.

Ravi Shastri reckons the surface will assist spinners but it will get better for batting as the game progresses. Nasser Hussain reiterates Shastri’s point, adding that it’s a question of just how much the ball will spin and when.

Match Day -1 training: Inside ENG, IND nets
The difference in mood and optimism was reflected on Saturday when both teams took their turn to get their eye in on the practice nets adjacent to the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on the eve of their coming together.
England’s session, which happened first, was one missing the jovial mood of its training outings at the beginning of the tournament. The ever-present boombox played out quietly in the background.
The batters took their turn in handling the spinners among the local net bowlers, with the occasional mix of throwdowns and pacers.
Talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes sandwiched his batting stint with spells of off-spin, a departure from his hard-on-the-deck medium pace, an experiment underlining the uncertainty in the side and its performance. READ MORE

World Cup Match Preview
The labyrinth of roads criss-crossing Lucknow’s heart are dotted with heritage buildings, harking back to a bygone era. The other end of the spectrum has contemporary streets and suburbs with their skyscrapers. Modern pizzas and ancient tunday kebabs jostle together in a multi-layered culinary landscape.
In this city imbued with history’s footprints, India takes on England in a World Cup game at the Ekana Stadium here on Sunday. The host gets another chance to extend its winning run. Be it Shubman Gill’s absence in the initial two games or Hardik Pandya’s current hibernation, Rohit Sharma’s men have found a way to stay afloat and land their punches.
Squaring against India is a rival, weighed down by the defending champion tag and bruised by four losses. A lone win over Bangladesh remains a mild palliative balm. England’s Bazball swagger in Tests has gone missing in ODIs under a different coaching structure. READ MORE
