Germany had already secured top spot in Group A3 prior to kick-off, with Hungary also confirmed as finishing third in the pool, setting up a relegation play-off fixture in the new year. And so there was a slightly experimental air to the evening, with both teams trying out some new partnerships and the visitors making nine changes.

After a subdued first half it was Germany who took the lead when Felix Nmecha reacted to tuck home a rebound in the 77th minute for his first international goal.

And the Borussia Dortmund midfielder looked to have won the game for Germany, only for VAR and the referee to give a handball decision against Robin Koch in the final seconds of added time.

Szoboszlai took advantage, dinking the ball beyond the otherwise excellent Alexander Nubel to level the scores with the final kick of the match.

The referee feels that Koch’s block with his hands as he turned away from the shot is enough to give a penalty, and we have late drama in Budapest, with what will surely be the last kick of the game.

Hungary have one final attack and there are big appeals for a penalty as a shot hits the arms of the turning Koch in the box. His hands were tucked in, but it could be argued that he extended the shape of his body to block the ball. The home fans and players want the penalty, and the referee has been called to the monitor.

Schäfer is booked for a rash challenge on Andrich, who is shown a yellow of his own for protests about the foul.

There will be four minutes added on at the end of the game.

Gruber replaces Varga for the final few minutes.

Hungary have been a bit disappointing tonight, and even a goal down they’re struggling to get going with anything beyond speculative long balls.

Szoboszlai has been lively in open play, but his set-piece delivery has been pretty shocking tonight. Once again he fails to make the most of a decent position.

DOUBLE CHANGE AS HUNGARY GO FOR IT

This is effectively a standalone fixture given that both teams know where they’ll finish in the Nations League group, and so there’s no reason not for Hungary to throw everything at it. They make two changes to try and do that, going even more attacking a sCsoboth and Schon are introduced.

Sane comes off and Nagelsmann introduces Kleindienst – a classic number nine, who has been told by his manager to play as one and stop dropping deep so much. In this team those instructions make a lot of sense.

Both teams have created chances, but Germany have played the better football tonight and are just about worthy of the lead.

76'

GOAL! HUNGARY 0-1 GERMANY (NMECHA)

A huge moment for Nmecha as he bags a goal on the night of his first start for Germany. A Wirst corner is met by Schlotterbeck, who is denied on the line, with Nmecha quickest to react to tuck home the rebound. 1-0.

Space is opening up at both ends as each team looks to wrap up their group fixtures with a win.

Nübel scrambles a corner away and then makes a save to deny Sallai from the resulting melee. It feels like a goal is coming, with the chances stacking up at both ends.

68'

Hungary are inches away from opening the scoring as Varga is played in by Sallai and looks to pick out the far bottom corner. A save sends the ball fractionally wide.

65'

Kata and Gera come on for Nikitscher and Nego.

63'

The changes have opened up the game even more and Havertz very nearly scores just moments after coming on, volleying an effort against the post after a flowing attacking move.
