Human Rights Day South Africa
A non-profit focused on bettering South Africa through student empowerment has shared free resources with teachers for Human Rights Day! But beyond students, we could all learn something more about Thursday’s public holiday.

South Africa (20 March 2024) — 21 March marks Human Rights Day in South Africa—one of the most important public holidays our calendar highlights. It’s a day all of us celebrate, but one not everyone fully understands.

The short story, is that Human Rights Day is a reminder of how far we as a country have come in the pursuit of freedom and democracy, which in turn entitle us to our Human Rights.

It honours the sacrifices made in the days of the past when these terms were not norms for everyone. And it honours the days of the future where these terms will be void of corrupt forces, and all-encompassing to all South Africans who still feel like fully-fledged freedom is not yet theirs because of the challenges we face as a country.

But there is far more to the story behind March 21, and its heart lies in Sharpeville.

In an effort to tell both of these stories and emphasise the relevance of Human Rights Day, NPO Trulife—a KZN-based organisation uplifting and empowering students and addressing educational gaps—has shared free educational resources to remind the youth of the day’s powerful and imperative message.

Of the free resources initiative and importance of Human Rights Day, Trulife’s Richard Gorven shares:

“Having worked with school goers for the past 12 years, we at Trulife really wanted to bridge the gap that we have seen between the youth and celebration days such as Human Rights Day. Simply put, there isn’t enough understanding of the history and significance and why celebrating Human Rights Day is still relevant today—far beyond enjoying a public holiday.

“As a result we have put together a bunch of free resources for teachers and learners that helps to address this gap.”

Richard adds that Trulife aims to provide teachers with free resources throughout the year, once a month under different topics.
