The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is investigating a video posted on social media by a patient, Tom London, who has made several serious allegations against the Helen Joseph Hospital.

In the video, London claims that “the doctors are behaving like the patients here are their little experiments,” alleging a lack of proper patient care.

He also highlighted various issues within the hospital, including malfunctioning taps and deteriorating ceilings.

The GDoH head of communication, Motalatale Modiba responded by noting that the department had initiated a provincial campaign called “I Serve With A Smile” nine months ago.

This initiative aims to improve staff attitudes and patient experiences across all healthcare facilities.

Modiba also addressed the infrastructure concerns raised by London, explaining that, “The GDoH has established an internal Infrastructure Unit which has now developed a maintenance and refurbishment programme.”

He said the function was previously managed by a separate infrastructure department.

The Emergency Department at Helen Joseph Hospital, which was recently reopened on 22 May 2024, features eight resuscitation rooms, 15 medical rooms, 10 surgical rooms, and six critically stable rooms. The facility has also been upgraded to better accommodate disabled individuals.

“Helen Joseph and other facilities are earmarked for further maintenance as part of efforts to improve infrastructure across facilities,” Modiba said

He encouraged patients to report any service issues to the quality assurance offices located at each facility.
