How To Save A Route On Google Maps

Saving a route on Google Maps through your mobile involves a process commonly referred to as "pinning." This can be done by bookmarking a recommended route or adding it to your Android homescreen. However, it's crucial to understand that this method doesn't provide automatic offline access to your directions. To access routes offline, you must download an offline map that covers both your starting point and destination.

How to pin a route in Google Maps

The term "pinning" essentially means bookmarking, but there's a catch – this feature is primarily designed for recommended routes. Unfortunately, you can't pin or bookmark a fully custom route. This limitation also affects offline usage. When utilizing Maps offline, modifying a recommended route is not an option. You are essentially restricted to a single set of directions without the flexibility to make changes to your route while offline. It's essential to keep these details in mind when using the pinning feature in Google Maps on your mobile device.

Follow these steps to save a route on Google Maps:

Ensure your device has an internet connection, then open the Google Maps app.Tap the "Search here" box and enter your destination.Choose a starting point and any midpoints to complete your route.Select "Directions" and confirm your mode of transportation is set to Driving; pinning doesn't work for Transit, Walking, Rideshare, or Cycling. In the bottom bar, showing the estimated travel time, press the "Pin" button to bookmark this route.

To access saved or pinned routes:

Tap the "Go" tab at the bottom when you launch Google Maps.Look for the tab displaying your usual routes; scroll up to find the bookmarked route. While online, you can choose to follow the recommended route or a different one. Alternate routes appear greyed-out until selected. Offline, only the recommended route is available, with no greyed-out options.

How to see directions and routes offline on mobile :

Open the app on your mobile.Tap your profile icon at the top right. In the pop-up menu, select "Offline maps."Tap "SELECT YOUR OWN MAP."Define the area to download by zooming in to include both start and end points.Press "Download." Keep in mind there's a limit on offline map size, so for extensive trips, save multiple maps. This ensures access to directions without internet, particularly during long journeys or emergencies.
