Champions League: Debutants Girona discover league phase opponents
The serious business now begins in the 2024-25 Champions League. On Thursday, UEFA held the draw for the league phase – introduced for the first time this season. Girona, who are playing in this competition for the very first time, were among the teams to learn their opposition for matches taking place between September and January.
Girona have been drawn against Liverpool (home) and Paris Saint-Germain (away) from Pot 1; Arsenal (home) and AC Milan (away) from Pot 2; Feyenoord (home) and PSV Eindhoven (away) from Pot 3; Slovan Bratislava (home) and Sturm Graz (away) from Pot 4.
It’s safe to say that Girona’s first-ever experience of the Champions League will not be easy. Facing four European heavyweights will be extremely tough, but Michel Sanchez will fancy his side’s chances of ruffling some features.
Those matches against Liverpool and Arsenal at Montilivi are sure to be very special. Irrespective of the results, this is an experience that Girona will be aiming to enjoy, and if they can pull off some unlikely result, they would have a decent chance of placing inside the top 24. The order of fixtures will be determined in the coming days.
