Greenwood, 22, was dismissed in the 50th minute of the match after protesting that he did not receive a free-kick before being penalised for a foul.

The post-match report from referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez outlined how Greenwood was sent off for saying ‘f*** you’ in the direction of the official.

The referee’s version of events were disputed by Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas, who told his post-match press conference that Greenwood told his teammates he had said ‘f*** sake’ and had not insulted anyone.

“The player has told me that he said ‘f*** sake’ and did not insult anyone,” Bordalas said.

Greenwood joined the mid-table La Liga side on a season-long loan deal from Manchester United on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The forward has scored five goals across 16 matches in all competitions this campaign for Getafe, who remain eighth in La Liga after this defeat.

Getafe finished the match with nine men as Greenwood’s red card followed a first half dismissal for Juanmi Latasa, while Damian Suarez was also shown a straight red card following his substitution off the pitch in the 70th minute due to dissent.

Greenwood was made available for transfer after United confirmed on August 21 that they had abandoned their plan to bring the forward back into the first-team squad.

He had been subject to an internal investigation from United since February when the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued its case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control. He denied all the alleged offences.
