George Baldock has died at the age of 31. The former Sheffield United and Milton Keynes Dons defender played just three days ago for Panathinaikos in their game against Olympiakos. He joined the Greek club in the summer from Sheffield United. Former United team-mate Harry Maguire posted a tribute to Baldock on social media while United say they are "shocked and extremely saddened" by the news.

Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has died at the age of 31.

Baldock spent seven years with United from 2017 to 2024, making 219 appearances and helping them win promotion to the Premier League in 2019.

He left the club in the summer to join Greek side Panathinaikos.

Sheffield United said in a statement: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock.

"The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends."

Baldock started just three days ago for Panathinaikos in their game against Olympiakos.

A Super League Greece statement read: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."

Former Sheffield United team-mate Harry Maguire shared a photo of Baldock on Instagram with the caption ‘RIP’.

Baldock started his career with Milton Keynes Dons before making the move to Sheffield United in 2017.

He became a key player for United before leaving for Panathinaikos in the summer.

He won 12 caps for Greece.

The English Football League said in a statement: "The EFL is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Baldock, a player who made a lasting impact with spells across the league at Sheffield United, Oxford United, Northampton Town and MK Dons

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former colleagues."

Panathinaikos said: "We are heartbroken, we are shocked by the passing of our George.

"The Panathinaikos family mourns his unexpected loss. We stand beside the family and loved ones of George Baldock."
