Washington, D.C. (10/18/2023) – Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle has been called up to the Canadian Women’s National Team for its upcoming friendlies against Brazil, Canada Soccer announced today.

Carle, who signed with the Spirit last December, has represented Canada in 37 matches, including during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was recently named to Canada’s final roster for this summer’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Carle was also an alternate for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and made her debut in the Canadian national youth program in 2013 at 14 years old. She hails from Lévis, Quebec.

The Canadian women’s national team will play Brazil in two international friendly matches on Saturday, October 28 and Tuesday, October 31. The matches will be held at Saputo Stadium in Montreal and Wanderers Grounds in Halifax, respectively.

Carle started all 22 regular season matches for this Spirit this year, playing the second-most minutes on the team with 1,899, trailing only 2023 Iron Woman and fellow back line member Sam Staab. Carle also provided the game-winning assist on forward Trinity Rodman’s stoppage time score during the Spirit’s September 30 match against Kansas City. Before joining the Spirit, Carle played one year of professional soccer with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s soccer in Sweden. There, she logged nearly 1,900 minutes in 22 matches, scoring two goals and adding one assist. Prior to turning pro, Carle was a two-time national champion (2018, 2021) under current Spirit President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian at Florida State and was a part of a 2021 Seminole backline that allowed only 13 goals in 25 games.
