Boks Triumph Over All Blacks to Reclaim Freedom Cup!
Western Cape, South Africa (08 September 2024) – There’s just something about the Springboks that makes the heart swell with pride, right? In a thrilling display of tenacity, skill, and pure determination, our beloved Boks edged past their old rivals, the All Blacks, in a match that will be talked about for years to come.
Saturday’s pulsating encounter at a packed DHL Stadium in Cape Town saw South Africa triumph 18-12 over New Zealand, clinching the Freedom Cup for the first time since 2009 and making history with their fourth consecutive win over the Kiwis in the professional era.

From the first whistle, it was clear that this wasn’t going to be an easy ride. The All Blacks came out strong, pressing hard with ball in hand, but they ran into a Springbok side that was as resolute as ever. The defence was solid, the crowd was roaring, and the battle lines were drawn. Despite a few challenges – including losing two lineouts in attacking positions and grappling with tactical kicking and discipline – the Boks showed they were there to fight till the very last minute.
The first half saw New Zealand taking the lead, heading into halftime 9-3, with Damian McKenzie kicking three penalty goals. The Boks, however, had other plans. The second half began with just as much drama and energy. Siya Kolisi, the ever-inspiring captain, sparked a resurgence with a determined drive to score his 12th Test try, putting the Boks in front 10-9. From there, it was a nail-biting clash of wits and strength.
As the game entered its final quarter, Handre Pollard and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu added vital points, inching the Boks ahead. The tension was palpable. Even when Willie le Roux was sent to the sin bin, the Springboks’ defence stood firm, refusing to let the All Blacks break through.
With only minutes remaining, the All Blacks’ Tyrel Lomax received a yellow card for a costly infringement, giving the Boks the upper hand. Malcolm Marx, ever the warrior, capitalized on the opportunity with a powerful drive over the line, extending the lead to 18-12.
And then, in the final moments, the Boks held their nerve, fending off relentless attacks to seal a historic win.
Seeing the team lift the Freedom Cup under the Cape Town night sky, surrounded by a crowd that had cheered with every tackle, pass, and kick, was an emotional moment. It was a scene that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Springboks – never giving up, always fighting back, and making the entire nation proud.
So here’s to the Springboks – for the unforgettable match, for making history, and for giving us a reason to celebrate once more!
