MBAPPE STARS AS FRANCE EASE PAST LUXEMBOURG

Kylian Mbappe played a starring role as France stepped up their Euro 2024 preparations with a commanding 3-0 win over Luxembourg.

Mbappe set up Randal Kolo Muani and Jonathan Clauss, before completing the scoring on a comfortable night for Les Bleus at Stade Saint-Symphorien.

France were quickly into their stride in Metz’s first senior international game for eight years.

Antoine Griezmann struck the post in the 12th minute, while Anthony Moris did well to thwart Mbappe’s volley from point-blank range on 26 minutes.

However, the Luxembourg goalkeeper was powerless as Les Bleus broke through two minutes before the break, Mbappe crossing for Kolo Muani to head home.

Mbappe provided another assist as the hosts put the result beyond doubt with 20 minutes remaining. After a short corner, the skipper teed up substitute Clauss, who flashed a fierce 20-yard strike past Moris via the underside of the crossbar.

Luxembourg almost pulled one back when Enes Mahmutovic’s looping header was brilliantly clawed away by Mike Maignan, but Mbappe had the final word with a precise first-time finish from Bradley Barcola’s square pass.

Four days after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, the midfielder replaces Fofana for the final couple of minutes.

GOAL!!! FRANCE 3-0 LUXEMBOURG (MBAPPE)

Barcola steals possession from record-breaker Jans and drives towards the penalty area.

The PSG forward then shows great awareness to find his former club mate, who slides a precise first-time shot into Moris' bottom-right corner.

Luxembourg enjoy a rare attack from a corner that is well met by Mahmutovic.

The centre-half's header loops dangerously towards goal, but Maignan somehow manages to claw it out and away.

The Paris Saint-Germain comes on for his senior international debut in place of Thuram.

At the other end of the experience scale, France's leading goalscorer Giroud is on for his 132nd cap, with Griezmann making way.

Mbappe has acres of space down the left flank and sends in a deep cross that momentarily looks like it might creep under Moris' crossbar.

However, the Luxembourg goalkeeper just about manages to scramble back and push it away.

Mbappe and Clauss are involved again with the latter squaring in the box for Griezmann, who cannot quite steer home his first-time shot.

GOAL!!! FRANCE 2-0 LUXEMBOURG (CLAUSS)

Les Bleus double their lead in spectacular fashion!

Taking a corner short, Mbappe fizzes the ball to the unmarked Clauss, who has plenty of time to take aim on the edge of the box.

When he does, the half-time substitute unleashes a vicious strike that flashes past Moris off the underside of the crossbar.

And they almost get it spot on as Thuram leads the charge, before feeding Mbappe out on the left.

The skipper seeks out Kolo Muani with a first-time cross to the far post, but it is slightly overhit and goes out for a throw.

France make two more changes as Kounde and Kante make way to be replaced by Pavard and Zaire-Emery.

Champions in 1984 and 2000, France will be hoping 2024 is the year they land their third European Championship.

It would move Les Bleus level with Germany and Spain, and make them the joint-most successful nation in the tournament's history.

Kolo Muani helps a lofted ball into the area across for Mbappe, who misses with his attempt at a spectacular overhead kick.

However, the danger is not over as Fofana lines one up from distance, but it is straight down the throat of Moris.

55'

Luxembourg make the change as Philipps comes on in place of the departed Mustafic.

There is a break in play with Mustafic in need of attention after taking a ball to the face.

He only came on as a substitute himself just before half-time, but it seems his match may be over.

Mbappe peels away at the far post to meet Kounde's deep cross, but he cannot direct his header towards the target.

48'

Deschamps made two substitutions at the break, with Saliba and Clauss brought on in place of Upamecano and Hernandez.

France go close as Mbappe bursts into the penalty area and cuts inside, but his shot is always rising.

2nd Half

KO

Luxembourg get the ball rolling again as they begin the second half.
