I tried the city's 'best falafel' on the hunt for Glasgow's Best Lunch

17 May 2023

The Glasgow Times is on the hunt for the best takeaway lunch spot in the city. We are looking for your recommendations across the city centre, North Glasgow, East End, Southside and West End, and will be judging food based on Value for Money, Taste, Atmosphere, Service and Variety.

Taking advantage of a dry afternoon, I headed along to a popular city centre hole in the wall as I continued the search for Glasgow's Best Lunch.

Falafel To Go, which is located on Hope Street between Kokoro and Masala Twist, proclaims to have the "best falafel in town" so it seemed like a perfect spot to try.

I headed to Falafel To Go at 12.30pm, hoping to beat the long queues that can often be seen forming at the takeaway and was fifth in line.

Glasgow Times:

I have eaten here once before, so I ordered exactly what I did last time - "a wrap with everything". This contains falafel, lettuce, tomato, pickles, tahini and chilli sauce inside a flatbread which is then toasted before being served.

It's worth noting there isn't a menu visible but both times I have been staff are friendly and will be happy to tell you everything that's available.

It took a total of 12 minutes from joining the queue to getting my food, so it wouldn't be my first choice on a rainy day, but the wait didn't feel too long and felt reasonable for the number of people in front of me and the fact each wrap is freshly prepared.

Glasgow Times:

The large wrap costs £4.50 which I think is really good value for the size and quality, and it is more than enough food for lunch. It comes in a paper bag and is wrapped inside further paper so it would be easy to eat on the go and I didn't find it messy.

The chilli sauce was a little too spicy for me, which I didn't remember from last time, so if I head there again I would ask for it without, but that is just my personal preference.

The wrap is really tasty and, in my opinion, very good value for money.

Glasgow Times:

What's the verdict?

Value for Money: 5/5 - I think £4.50 for a falafel wrap with "everything" is a really reasonable price, and it's more than enough on its own to keep me going all day.

Taste: 4/5 - The wrap was full of flavour and tasted really fresh. I would go without the chilli sauce next time.

Atmosphere: 3/5 -It's hard to judge the atmosphere when you are just standing on the pavement, but on a dry, somewhat sunny day like today it's fine to do so. It does smell amazing though.

Service: 4/5 - The service is friendly but there is one person doing everything so you can't expect them to stand and have a chat. They do move through the queue quickly.

Variety: 2/5 - As can only be expected with a small unit like this, there isn't a lot of choice and it's the sort of place you go if you know you're in the mood for falafel.

Overall score: 18/25
