Europa Conference League chaos as bath towels are used to dry ...

30 Nov 2023

European nights rarely go to plan, with teams ripping up the script on many occasions.

However, staff at Olimpija Ljubljana wouldn't have been expecting to be attempting to dry with pitch with towels. The Slovenian champions had tried every method under the sun to ensure their clash with Lille in the Europa Conference League went ahead - including drying the pitch with a load of towels.

"Maybe add a couple thousand towels," one fan joked. While a second replied: "Maybe use 2 towels each, then it will only take 6 months instead of 3!"

"I got a couple of jokes for them but I don’t think they’d appreciate dry humour," a third responded. And another added: "And some people think it's not the greatest European Cup of all time lol..."

Lille extended their gap at the top of Group A, as they beat the Slovenian side 2-0 away from home. Slovan Bratislava remain second in the group after they survived a scare during a trip to the Faroe Islands.

Slovan and Lille will now go head-to-head on the final matchday of the group stages in two weeks for top spot of the group - with both sides already assured of a spot in the knockout rounds.

Ljubljana are set to finish bottom of the group, unless they can beat KI Klaksvik, who made history just by being in the competition.
