West Indies require 326 to win this first ODI against England in Antigua.

The innings got off to a blistering start as England’s re-jigged side began life after the World Cup in top gear, with Phil Salt and Will Jacks getting the team off to a flier.

Jos Buttler was the only member of England’s top eight not to get a start, but only Harry Brook was able to go past 50, putting together a good partnership with Zak Crawley to rebuild the innings before kicking on to 71 from 71 balls.

Important late contributions from Sam Curran and Brydon Carse lifted England beyond 300, which could be a challenging target on a pitch that saw inconsistent bounce and a bit of turn.

Gudakesh Motie finished with the pick of the figures with 2/49, while Oshane Thomas bowled well through the middle overs to take 2/57. Romario Shepherd (2/77), Alzarri Joseph (1/65) and (1/76) completed the bowling returns, as West Indies used just the five bowlers across the 50 overs.

Rehan Ahmed has a big swing and smashes a six off Tottenham back down the ground. That’s not where he was aiming, but he got so much on it that it went for six anyway.

He follows up with a similar attempt but skies it and Thomas takes the catch off his own bowling. Rehan departs for 12 from 8.

Atkinson is the last man in, but he defies that billing with a lovely shot first up – a lofted drive that clears the ring and races to the boundary.

Atkinson goes for a big hit off the final ball but skies it and it’s a catch in the deep. England are all out off the final ball for 325.

This is excellent death bowling from Joseph. He keeps things tight for the penultimate over, going for just singles to keep England’s likely total down.

Curran opens up a Cariah over with another huge six down the ground to bring up the 300. This is the sort of batting display that persuaded England to, perhaps misguidedly, promote him up to seven at one stage during the World Cup.

Curran’s flurry comes to an abrupt end though as he’s run out for 38 from 26, but that’s a significant contribution and a good bounce back from the all-rounder.

Rehan Ahmed strolls out to the middle. Cariah finishes with 76/1 from his ten overs.

It’s a good response from Shepherd, who almost gets Curran as a swipe across the line is edged fractionally wide of the stumps. That over’s brought the likely total down a touch, but England have done well to get up to this 300 area.

Carse goes big again, getting plenty of willow on a six over midwicket.

Curran drives for four more and Carse finishes the over with a superb drive down the ground. Joseph is struggling to keep a lid on the scoring.

This pair are doing a nice job for England, and Curran goes big down the ground, slamming Thomas for six.

Carse gets away with a feather of an edge off the final ball as Hope can’t quite get fingers to what would have been a great catch behind the stumps.

England are getting up towards a competitive score here, on a surface that has some inconsistent bounce for the quicks and some turn for the spinners.

Carse finds the rope again with a nice drive through the off-side.

West Indies are striving for a breakthrough but are slightly losing their line in the process. Joseph fires a wide down the leg side to illustrate exactly that point.

Really nice from Sam Curran, who picks up two fours, batting in sunglasses, oddly.

England roll along, with their sights set on potentially getting up to 300.

Carse hits a big six down the ground, going after the spin over Cariah.

That’s a statement from the big man, and England will know that they have plenty of hitting ability in this tail, even if the recognised batters are all back in the hutch.

Brook goes for another big shot and his innings comes to an abrupt end as he slices a drive to Joseph on the edge of the circle.

That’s a key wicket and a deserved one for Shepherd, who has come back well after his tricky start to the innings, and caught Brook out with a clever slower ball there.

England’s task is now to try and bat out the overs and get up to something decent if they can.

Brook’s cuts superbly for four off Thomas, but very nearly falls to the next ball as he smashes one in the direction of Athanaze.

He’s been the pick of the fielders today and almost holds on to a blinder, but grasses it.

Livingstone gets in a right tangle as one keeps low from Shepherd and is struck on the pads. He reviews but that’s plumb and Livingstone has to depart for 17 from 19.

The lack of bounce on that was really tricky Livingstone to handle and will have caught the eye of the England attack, who will be hoping for more such inconsistent bounce in the second innings.

It was little surprise to see Livi review. He seems to send everything upstairs, and the three reds send him packing.

Curran comes to the crease at No. 8, kicking off a series that could be really significant for his international future, in this format at least. He’s a lock in T20s, but in the 50-over format he has plenty to prove after a stinker of a World Cup.

Here goes Brook. Cariah has been excellent today, but he’s forced off his line by some very aggressive batting from the England man, who is looking in really good touch now.

Brook makes room to slog-sweep for a maximum off the first ball of the over, and then latches on to a shorter delivery next up to hit Cariah for four.

It’s good from Brook, and Livingstone decides it’s time to get in on the action too.

If you were to picture two Livingstone shots it would be these, opening up his stance and muscling a six down the ground, and then heaving across the line to found the stands at cow corner.

That's the biggest over of the game so far.

A huge six from Brook lands on the bank to get the England fans cheering.

And the No. 5 brings up his fifty off the next delivery with a deft dink down to third man.

Motie gets through another safe over.

There’s more good news for West Indies as Shepherd comes back onto the field after receiving a bit of treatment in the last few minutes.

Joseph continues as West Indies look to turn the screw.

England play him out for just a single and things have steadied a little bit. The run rate is now at 5.5, well down from their blistering first ten overs.

Buttler goes and that’s a big wicket for Motie. The England captain attempts a reverse sweep and gloves one up in the air to Athanaze at first slip. He departs for 3 from 13 and his poor run continues.

The players take drinks as Livingstone comes out to the crease. He’s another player in need of a bit of confidence after what was a horrible World Cup with the bat in hand.

West Indies bring Joseph back into the attack knowing that this is a crucial partnership to break.

Brook sends Buttler back from another attempted quick single, wisely so, and his captain gives the thumbs up.

Buttler very nearly chops on from the final ball of an over that goes for just two runs. Tidy.

Motie stays on to get through these spin overs quickly. He goes for just a single as Buttler gives himself a few to get in.

This is a big series for Buttler, who underperformed spectacularly with the bat in the World Cup.

Brook has a bit of responsibility now after that run out and steps up with a beauty of a four off Thomas, driven down the ground.

That’s comfortably Brook's best shot today and keeps England ticking over.

Oh wow, that is a mess! Crawley and Brook get their wires crossed and it’s the simplest of run-outs. Crawley called for the single and set off, but Brook was having none of it. Crawley doesn’t even get back in shot on the replay as Athanaze fields well and the keeper whips off the bails, and he is absolutely fuming as he walks off.

Crawley might be fuming, but with a fielder of that quality in the ring it was always going to be an extremely tight single. I’m not convinced Brook would have made it.

That wicket brings Buttler out to the middle.

This is really nice cricket from England as Crawley and Brook keep things ticking over as Thomas returns.

He gets one to keep low and skid into the pads of Crawley, but that was always sliding down and Hope wisely opts not to review.

Brook pulls out the reverse sweep but doesn’t quite get the contact he’s looking for. There’s a hint of a chance for King at first slip, who is close to getting a hand to it at full stretch.

Cariah continues to make the ball talk, but Crawley and Brook are doing a nice job for England in getting through this challenging phase of the game. There’s a real platform being set for both this pair and Buttler, Livingstone and co to potentially exploit at the back end.

Motie gets through another quick over as the game rattles along.

Crawley goes for a huge attempted sweep and misses it completely. The West Indies close fielders hold their heads in their hands – that was close to getting an edge.

Cariah finds an inside edge off the next ball that darts between the back foot and the stumps and Crawley survives.

The leg-spinner is causing Crawley some serious issues here.

Motie is back in the action as West Indies look to get through their spin overs during this middle phase.

He’s getting some nice purchase, but is undermined slightly by a horrible misfield from Carty that hands England a four and brings up the fifty partnership for Crawley and Brook.

Brook gets the over off to a decent start with a late cut for four. This is a big tour for him, coming on the back of the news that he was released by his IPL franchise.

Nice from Shepherd as he takes the pace off and causes England a few issues - leaking some runs but perhaps showing the way forward for the pace attack.

The 150 is up though, and England will be comfortable enough with things as they are. The scoring rate has slowed slightly, but not to a level that will prevent a big total being reached here.

Cariah is ticking here. He conjures another chance with a flighted beauty that turns out of the rough, catches the edge, and flies through the gap between a diving keeper and first slip.

It’s beautiful bowling and tricky for the England batters right now, but the watching English spinners will be paying close attention, not least the youngster Rehan Ahmed.

A steady over sees England play out another set of six from Shepherd with minimal risk.

This pair are ticking things over after England got off to a flier in the first powerplay, thanks in no small part to Phil Salt.

A huge let-off for Crawley after another big four, this time smashed back over the head of the spinner.

He heaves across the line and skies Cariah straight to Motie, who puts down a simple chance. He’d back himself to catch that 99 times out of 100, it’s a bad drop.

Shepherd comes back into the attack to give Thomas a bit of a rest. His opening spell was expensive, very expensive, and his decent over ends on a disappointing note as Crawley cuts him superbly to the boundary.

England have no need to race along at this point, and the rebuild continues as Crawley and Brook keep things ticking over against Cariah.

The match is nicely balanced at this stage.

Crawley crunches a beauty of a boundary through the covers to take the attack back to Thomas.

That was a little bit wider from the bowler and he pays the price.

Brave captaincy from Shai Hope as he turns to more spin despite what statisticians would say is an unfavourable match-up against the left-handed Duckett.

Yannic Cariah starts with some beautiful flight and loop and he gets the breakthrough, responding well to another reverse sweep four by Duckett to arrow one in at the stumps and leaving Duckett looking a bit silly as a scoop attempt goes wrong.

It’s good bowling, but you can’t be too harsh on Duckett – this is his strategy against spin, it’s part of why he was picked. He departs for 20 from 23 and England now need a bit of a rebuild after their rapid start.

Duckett gets a bit lucky as he gets tucked up attempting a hook off Thomas and edges narrowly wide of the keeper.

Brilliant fielding from Athanaze means no further runs come off the over as Thomas continues to build pressure.

That is vintage Zak Crawley as he creams a drag down through the covers for four.

He gets a bit luck next up with sliced shot over the top that lands short of the outfielders, and that single brings up England’s 100 in quick time.

This is a really nice start from Thomas, who finds a good line to concede just a single off his second over.

Motie has switched ends and is immediately met with a sweep assault from Duckett.

Anyone who has seen Duckett play spin before would have seen this coming, and the England man pulls out back-to-back reverse-sweep fours to put the pressure back on the left-arm spinner.

Crawley gets off the mark and then keeps the strike with a single off the last ball of the over.

The end of the first powerplay is the signal for West Indies to call on Oshane Thomas.

He’s got all of the skills to be a superb middle-overs bowler if this is how the selectors wish to use him going forward.

He starts well, conceding just a single off his first over and finishing with a beauty that has Crawley raising his eyebrows in surprise.

It’s another breakthrough and a reward for Joseph who has plugged away well in the face of that opening onslaught. The right-arm quick gets a ball to leave Will Jacks from short of a length, drawing the edge and sending the other opener back to the pavilion for 26 from 24.

That’s exactly what the West Indies needed after that rapid start. England’s openers have done their job with a fast start, but both will be slightly frustrated not to have kicked on.

Ben Duckett joins Crawley out in the middle and gets off the mark with a nudged single.

The first breakthrough comes for West Indies and it’s Motie who gets it. Salt opens up and tries to slam the spinner through the covers, but doesn’t make decent contact and spoons a simple catch to Carty to depart for 45 from just 28 deliveries.

Zak Crawley plays out the rest of the over, surviving one slight scare when he under-edges a sweep past the stumps.

Joseph changes ends and forces a rare play and a miss. But a misfield gives Jacks another boundary to keep the score ticking over.

West Indies turn to spin and it’s a wise call, something needed to change.

Five wides means that the score keeps on ticking over for England, but the batters immediately look more wary against the slower ball.

That's a nice start from Motie.

The boundaries keep on coming as Salt drives for four, but there’s a first scare for the openers as West Indies appeal for a catch behind. The ball flicked the pad rather than the edge and Salt survives, and he follows up with a huge pull for six to bring up England’s 50 in just the sixth over.

He beats the in-field with the last shot of the over, finding the rope again.

Salt is slightly fortunate that a ball that dies a little on the surface doesn’t catch an edge, but the opening pair's confidence isn’t shaken by that inconsistent bounce, and Jacks pulls the last ball of the over to the boundary to keep England rocketing along.

The runs keep on flowing as Jacks creams another sublime four. The pair see out the over as Shepherd tightens up his line.

This is a superb start from England and exactly what was envisioned from picking this opening pair. Jacks gets in on the action with a beautiful lofted drive for six. He holds his pose on the follow-through, knowing just how sweet that shot was.

And, in good news for fans for technology, DRS is back in action.

It’s Shepherd who takes the new ball with Joseph, with Thomas held back for a bit of first-change firepower.

Will Jacks gets off strike in his fifth ODI for England with a single, and Salt keeps the momentum going with a huge hook for six and follows it up with a peach of a drive through the covers for four.

There’s a brief pause mid-over as the umpires talk to the two teams to let them know that DRS is currently unavailable.

Joseph starts right on the money with three dot balls, moving the ball around nicely off a length.

But Salt lines up a slightly fuller delivery and smashes a one-bounce four to get England up and running, and then adds a second boundary with a fortuitous thick inside edge down to long leg.

The decision to try and get Oshane Thomas back up to international standard is a fascinating one. The West Indies pacer is a real x-factor player if he can get it right, and will form part of a fearsome pace unit with Alzarri Joseph.

The home side have picked two specialist spinners who will hope for some new-ball wickets to give them pressure to work with through the middle overs.

It was a poor World Cup for a number of England players, but arguable none were as disappointing as Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran. The pair are young enough and talented enough that they could potentially be involved in the next World Cup, so England have given them both a chance to get right back to it and prove that they’ve got the chops for ODI Cricket.

The end of Moeen Ali and David Willey’s ODI careers means that there are two short-term slots open in the team, and Livingstone and Curran slot straight back in to those.

Having those two a place lower at seven and eight feels like a much-better balance than what they were asked to do during the World Cup, but it’ll be interesting to see how they go, particularly later on with the ball.

The four players to miss out from the England squad are Ollie Pope, Tom Hartley, Matthew Potts and John Turner.

The balance means that we’ll likely see Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks sharing the fifth set of ten overs later on today, but first up it’s a chance for a new-look top order to have a crack at the West Indies.

It’s all about power at the top of the order with Will Jacks and Phil Salt tasked with getting the team off to a flier ahead of a strong-looing 3-6 of Crawley, Duckett, Brook and Buttler.

England have won the toss and Jos Buttler chooses to bat first in Antigua.

The home side are also looking to move on from a poor recent run in ODIs. Failure to automatically qualify for the 2023 World Cup was compounded by a dismal performance in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe last summer, meaning that the West Indies missed out on both the World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

So this ODI series is very much the start of something new, as they look to build a new side with an eye on qualifying for the next World Cup.

England’s World Cup could barely have gone worse. But for captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott, it’s about putting that experience behind them and looking forward to next year’s T20 World Cup and then the Champions Trophy in 2025.

This match is the start of that ODI build-up towards the 2025 Champions Trophy and the next World Cup cycle, and it’s important for the players involved too – England have to wait until September for more chances to play ODIs after this tour as things stand, so there’s a real chance to lay down a marker here.

It’s time for a new ODI era. England’s One Day International reboot begins today on TNT Sports as Jos Buttler’s new-look squad begin their tour of the Caribbean in Antigua.

There will be some new faces as England look to move on from their World Cup debacle against a West Indies side who are also at the start of their own reset. I’m Tom Bennett and I’ll bring you live coverage right here throughout the day.

Team news is on the way, with the first ball due in 45 minutes’ time.

England start their white-ball series in the West Indies with an ODI in Antigua on Sunday, December 3.

Coverage on TNT Sports 1 starts at 13:00 UK time ahead of the game getting under way at 13:30.

The match is followed by two more ODI clashes before five T20 internationals.
