Gomez on for England

74' England 1-0 Bosnia

A sixth change for England and another defensive change made by Southgate.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez is on for his 14th England cap as Dunk is replaced.

Speculative Kane effort parried for a corner

72' England 1-0 Bosnia

Kane has only been on the pitch 10 minutes and I make it four shots that he has had already.

This is, by far, his most speculative as he turns his defender and strikes from all of 25 yards. The ball wobbles around in the air (a bit like the Jabulani, if you remember that) and Vasilj is just about able to parry it behind for a corner.

Kane looks pretty desperate for his 63rd England goal, here.

Kane into England's all-time top 10 for caps

This substitute appearance has moved Harry Kane into the top 10 on the list of most caps for England, level with Bryan Robson on 90.

68' England 1-0 Bosnia

Kane, who is on for his 90th England cap, is straight into the action.

With space in front of him, he charges towards the Bosnia before letting a powerful strike fly from 25 yards but it is blocked behind for a corner.

From the corner, he meets Maddison's delivery at the near post but he was never going to squeeze his right-footed effort in from there with the angle against him.

Southgate continues his search for a deputy left-back

65' England 1-0 Bosnia

Why there is VAR for a friendly match, I have absolutely no idea. But it has benefitted England and Palmer coolly slotted away the penalty, as he always does for Chelsea.

Now Southgate has made a quintet of substitutions on the hour mark, with Kane the most notable of those.

Konsa has switched to left-back with Trippier now off the field, as the search for a left-sided defender continues.

Gazibegovic shown a yellow card

64' England 1-0 Bosnia

The yellow card is back out, as it was for Tahirovic after his concession of the penalty.

This time, Gazibegovic is the recipient after a cynical foul on Bowen who was headed for the Bosnia penalty area.

Five England changes bring two debuts

62' England 1-0 Bosnia

A nice moment for Jarrad Branthwaite and Adam Wharton as they are brought on for their senior England debuts.

James Maddison, Harry Kane and Jack Grealish also enter the action.

Goalscorer Palmer, Eze, Guehi, Watkins and Trippier are the five players withdrawn, the latter to a brilliant ovation from his home supporters.

No one better from 12 yards

61' England 1-0 Bosnia

A slight change of technique for Palmer who slips slightly just as he is about to make contact.

But it makes no difference as he smashes the penalty into the bottom right corner.

Goalkeeper Vasilj got a touch to it, but he was never keeping that out.

60' England 1-0 Bosnia

Never in doubt!

Penalty for England!

59' England 0-0 Bosnia

Well, from that corner, England have been awarded a penalty.

Before Eze won his header, Konsa was being dragged to the ground by Tahirovic and a quick trip to the VAR screen leaves the referee with no choice but to award the spot kick.

Kane is not on the pitch yet, so Cole Palmer will take...

Bowen flashes an effort across goal

57' England 0-0 Bosnia

Another England corner and another big chance.

Eze rises above his marker and his header is perfectly placed into the path of Bowen. He has a wild swing at it with his left foot and it flies across the six-yard box.

Despite the packed penalty area, it somehow misses everyone.

Palmer hesitates and another chance passes him by

56' England 0-0 Bosnia

The chances keep coming for England, but they still cannot test Vasilj in the Bosnia goal.

Palmer is picked out by Bowen and he moved into the penalty area with his first touch.

Anticipating a defender over his shoulder, the Chelsea forward pauses and fashions a yard of space but the ball gets stuck under his feet and his shot is, once again, blocked.

This is so much better from England, though.

Deflected Palmer effort rolls wide

54' England 0-0 Bosnia

More penetrative passing from Alexander-Arnold and this time he feeds Palmer who takes a great first touch before shooting from the edge of the penalty area.

His shot, though, is blocked at source and trickles behind for a corner. There are chances for Dunk and Konsa from the resulting set piece, but Bosnia are able to keep out the hosts.

England are really benefitting from Alexander-Arnold operating higher up the pitch when they have the ball.

A much improved start to the second half

52' England 0-0 Bosnia

England have already done more in the first five minutes of this second half than they did in the whole of the first.

They are moving the ball much quicker and asking questions of the Bosnia defence who could have played the first half in their slippers.

Southgate and his assistant manager Steve Holland have just been locked in discussion and it seems James Maddison has been instructed to ready himself for a substitute appearance.

Watkins goes close after brilliant Alexander-Arnold pass

50' England 0-0 Bosnia

That is superb from Alexander-Arnold and that is exactly why he is being trusted as a midfielder in this England line-up.

From the halfway line, he clips an excellent ball in behind the Bosnia defence and Watkins is on his bike. Unfortunately for him, so is the Bosnia goalkeeper and he is just able to get there ahead of the Aston Villa striker.

Watkins heads over

Getty Images

47' England 0-0 Bosnia

An early chance in this second half for England.

Alexander-Arnold whips in a really dangerous corner and Watkins makes sure he wins it. He did win it, but could not keep his header under the crossbar.

Second half underway!

46' England 0-0 Bosnia

No changes for either team at half-time and we are underway for the second half.

I would expect Southgate make an alteration or two if it stays 0-0 for too much longer.

Gordon not impressed

The substitutes bench was clearly not the most exciting place to spend that first half...

Excitement at a premium at St James' Park

HT England 0-0 Bosnia

The last time England's men played at St James' Park, in 2005, David Beckham got booked for re-entering the field of play with only one boot on.

Will tonight's game produce a moment as exciting as that?
