Egypt v Paraguay - Olympic football men's quarter-final - LIVE ...

2 Aug 2024
Egypt vs Paraguay

FINAL RESULT: PARAGUAY 4-5 EGYPT ON PENS

Fabián Balbuena has to score and does the business. Adel with chance to win it for Egypt. He tucks it under Fernandes to the keeper's right. Just got there and Egypt win the penalty shootout 5-4 after a 1-1 draw. Phew! What a night. They will face France or Argentina in the last four.

PARAGUAY 3-4 EGYPT

Two more pens on the go. Marcos Gómez goes down the middle. Easy finish as Alaa headed to his left. But Hossam Abdelmaguid is good with his penalty kick. Egypt one penalty short of victory. Superb finish from the centre-back.

PARAGUAY 2-3 EGYPT

Wílder Viera levels for the South American side, but Karim El Debes prods home to maintain Egypt's advantage. Fine pen.

PARAGUAY 1-2 EGYPT

Marcelo Pérez sees his penalty saved by Alaa before Elneny converts. Advantage Egypt.

PARAGUAY 1-1 EGYPT

Gomez scores the opener before Koka levels for Egypt.

120+2' THERE GOES THE FINAL WHISTLE!

Gomez drags a free-kick well over the bar. Pretty much a non-event in extra-time. It ends 1-1. Could have cut straight to the pens at full-time of normal time.

118' LATE FOUL BY EGYPT

Gomez taken out late by the forearm of Hossam Abdelmaguid. Two minutes added to the extra-time period.

116' OFFSIDE FLAG GOES UP

Looks like both sides are resigned to penalties here. Diego Gómez is caught offside on that occasion.

114' FREE-KICK CHANCE FOR PARAGUAY

Flores rising at the back post to head the ball at Egypt's goal, but a few yards over the bar from the Diego Gómez free-kick delivery.

112' ZIZO IS GOING TO DEPART THE SCENE

Think he may have a groin injury or perhaps just cramp as he is replaced by Karim El Debes. Winger for a winger.

110' PARAGUAY LOOK TO BREAK

The Egypt defence nowhere to be seen as their opponents suddenly have a 4 v 2 on the break, but the final pass is lacking and Egypt race back to clear the danger.

108' CHANCE FOR EGYPT

Ball breaks kindly to Adel in a packed Paraguay box. He swivels to get the shot away, but Fernandes reacts well to nudge the ball behind his goal. Not too much pace on the finish.

106' AND THIS SECOND HALF IS RUNNING

Or not running when you look at the fatigue on show out there. Can someone find a moment of quality to get this won before penalty kicks?

105+4' ALL ABOUT POSSESSION

Neither side willing to risk runners when they have the ball. Almost like a non-event as the referee blows the half-time whistle. Seems like penalties is a certainty.

104' FOUR MINUTES ADDED TO THE FIRST PERIOD

So much time added to this match. Five in the first half, 10 in the second half and another four thrown into the mix in extra-time.

101' VERY LITTLE GOALMOUTH ACTION

Both teams determined not to lose a goal. Still wide open if one team can muster some genuine quality as Adel's cross is plucked from the air by Fernandes.

99' TENSION CONTINUES TO BUILD

Ahmed Atef is booked for a late challenge on Gilberto Flores. Perez also in the book for some foul play.

97' MEANWHILE FRANCE LEAD ARGENTINA

An early lead in Bordeaux for the hosts via the finish from Mateta in the final quarter-final. Winner of that will face Egypt or Paraguay. Follow it live here

95' FATIGUE TAKES EFFECT IN MARSEILLE

Has been a really exacting shift for both sets of players in this heat in Marseille. Looks like there are a lot of tired limbs and minds out there. Who wants this the most?

93' NO PENALTY IS THE DECISION

Referee went to take a look at the monitor, but decides nothing is amiss and waves play on. That was all very odd. Egypt still complaining. Relief for Paraguay.

91' EXTRA-TIME IS ON THE MOVE

Difficult to predict where this match heads from here. Egypt chasing the lead as cross by Adel is knocked over his own bar by a white shirt before Hossam Abdelmaguid heads well over the bar from a corner. VAR going to take a look here after Hossam Abdelmaguid went down in the box.

90+9' FULL-TIME: EGYPT 1-1 PARAGUAY

Egypt happy enough then to take this contest to extra-time. Paraguay thought they had the match won, but couldn't see it out. No nearer to discovering a winner in Marseille.

90+5' A BOOKING FOR VIERA

Wílder Viera with a mistimed challenge on Mostafa Saad, who needs some treatment. Almost time up.

90+3' EGYPT WITH REFRESHED OPTIMISM

Paraguay being pressed back deep in their own half. Looking a bit jaded as Egypt embark upon a period of keep-ball. Knocking it about for fun at the moment.

89' ARE WE HEADING FOR EXTRA-TIME?

Wouldn't bet that there won't be a dramatic winner before the extra 30 minutes is allocated. Eight minutes of time added to the match. Egypt fans suddenly come to life.

87' GOAL! PARAGUAY 1-1 EGYPT (ADEL)

Would you believe it! A goal in the dying moments of normal time as Adel tracks the cross by Zizo to nod into the net from four yards out. Couldn't miss. And this quarter-final is 1-1. Brilliant delivery.

85' ANOTHER YELLOW CARD ON THE GO

Gilberto Flores has been booked for Paraguay, who are trying to run down the clock as much as possible. Egypt still with time to save themselves.

83' BOOKING FOR ZIZO

Suspect that was brought about for a spot of dissent after Rivas and Saad challenged for a loose ball. Egypt searching for some magic, but Paraguay continue to carry menace on the counter attack.

81' WORRYING TIMES FOR EGYPT

They need to find a clinical edge to their play with the clock ticking down. All about game management for Paraguay now.

79' ENFORCED CHANGE FOR PARAGUAY

Gilberto Flores replaces the injured Julio Enciso, who looks crestfallen as he departs the scene. Meanwhile, Bilal Mazhar is on for Osama Faisal as Egypt try to alter the mood. Mostafa Saad is also on for Mahmoud Saber with Ahmed Atef replacing Mohamed Shehata.

77' WATER BREAK ON THE GO

Soaring heat and humidity of Marseille prompts chance for players to take on board some water.

75' GREAT PACE BY PEREZ OUT WIDE

Really taking up a good position in the Egypt half, but can't find a team-mate with the cross before Fernandes tips the finish by Zizo over his bar. Timely stop.

73' A CHANGE MADE BY PARAGUAY

Ángel Cardozo Lucena replaced Alexis Cantero seconds before that opening goal. What have Egypt got in response here?

71' (GOMEZ) PARAGUAY 1-0 EGYPT

And there is the opening goal. Captain Diego Gómez races onto the ball from Julio Enciso to smash the finish low and hard into the net. Terrific finish. Wow. A 1-0 lead for the South American side.

70' FANS CONTINUE TO ENJOY THEIR NIGHT

No goals to illuminate the contest, but plenty of noise on offer with this quarter-final joust right in the balance.

68' FAISAL TRIES HIS LUCK

Spins nicely into space for Egypt, but the finish lacks any sort of conviction. Easy take for Fernandes to collect in the Paraguay goal.

66' FIRST BOOKING OF THE NIGHT

Julio Enciso taken out of the action late by Koka, who picks up a yellow card for his efforts. One goal might well win this match now.

64' FINE STOP BY FERNANDES

Brilliant diving stop low to his left to nudge the volley by Osama Faisal wide of goal. That was heading into the net.

62' CHANGES MUST BE COMING SOON

Paraguay have a corner as they bid to find the crucial opener. Fabián Balbuena inches away from connecting with a corner as it was fizzed into the box at pace.

60' PARAGUAY HAVE FOUND SOME RESISTANCE

Difficult to believe the South American side have shipped seven goals in this event so far. Look solid in their shape in Marseille.

58' ZIZO GOES FOR A ZICO ATTEMPT

That is fully 30 yards out. Got plenty of power on the finish, but a comfortable stop for Gatito Fernández in the Paraguay goal. Would need to be good to beat a keeper from that range.

56' IS THIS GAME OPENING UP?

Not before time one might argue, but perhaps the heat and humidity of the conditions are having an effect. Elneny with plenty of pace on a shot from distance, but over the bar. Adel with the set-up pass on that occasion.

54' A FINE STOP BY ALAA IN THE EGYPT GOAL

Perez with a real probing run into space. Goes for goal at the near post, but Hamza Alaa does supremely well to make the stop low to his left. Diego Gómez with a fine pass to play provider.

52' PEREZ ALMOST THROUGH FOR PARAGUAY

Suddenly the Egyptian defence is cut wide open by a pass through the middle. Hamza Alaa quickly off his line to collect ahead of Perez.

50' EGYPT TRYING TO INJECT SOME PACE

Attempting to make a quick start to the second period as Mohamed Shehata is penalised for a late challenge on Julio Enciso. Still no yellow cards doled out.

48' ALMOST A DREAM START FOR EGYPT

Zizo with a deflected cross for Ibrahim Adel, but it just eludes the Egypt player at the back post five yards or so out. Fabián Balbuena with a vital touch on the ball otherwise that was the opening goal right there.

46' OFF WE GO FOR THE SECOND HALF

All on the line then for these two sides in the second period. Can we unearth a goal here? Difficult match to call. No changes at the breaks.

45+5' HALF-TIME: EGYPT 0-0 PARAGUAY

It is all taut and tense in the heat of Marseille. 0-0 at the break. This contest is well in the balance as Paraguay's players have a quick chat on the field of play before heading for their dressing room.

45+2' EGYPT KEEPER LOSES FLIGHT OF THE BALL

That was worrying for fans of the Pharaohs. Hamza Alaa off his line for a cross, but nowhere near it and Egypt wallop away the loose ball.

43' SAVES AT BOTH ENDS

Suddenly a bit of action towards the end of the first period as Saber sees a shot blocked by Fernandez before Paraguay break with Hamza Alaa halting the finish by Marcelo Pérez. Five minutes added to the half.

41' A POWERFUL EFFORT FROM THE SOUTH AMERICANS

Comes off the boot of Julio Enciso from the Rivas pass. Plenty of power on that, but a few yards wide of the Egypt left-hand post. That was travelling from 25 yards.

39' EGYPT TRYING TO PASS THROUGH PARAGUAY

But the white shirts remaining in an uncompromising mood at the back as they thump the ball clear and look to hit on the counter.

37' NO BOOKINGS IN THIS CONTEST

Which is quite a minor miracle when you consider the amount of fouls on the move. A least half a dozen late ones in the Marseille heat.

34' PLENTY OF FOULS

Ahmed Koka is taken out of the action late by Marcos Gómez. Paraguay certainly closing down space with real enthusiasm. All a bit tetchy.

32' ARE EGYPT COMING TO LIFE?

A few glimpses of what they can do when they find space in the Paraguay box. Ahmed Eid is fouled as Paraguay attempt to find some momentum. Julio Enciso over 25 yards out as he uncorks a shot, but finish is always heading high and over the bar.

30' GOLDEN CHANCE FOR EGYPT

First real chance of the night falls to Egypt, but the finish by Mahmoud Saber is blocked by the shoulder of Gatito Fernández and the balls flies over the bar from the pass by Faisal, who needs a spot of treatment.

28' PARAGUAY GO FOR GOAL

Diego Gómez opts to smash an effort at goal, but lacks the right direction and easy enough stop for Hamza Alaa in the centre of the goal.

27' FOUL PLAY BY EGYPT

Osama Faisal with a cynical late challenge on Julio Enciso. No booking. 26 yards out. Will this prompt a shot by Paraguay?

25' KEEPERS YET TO BE TESTED

Daniel Rivas attempts to make some progress down the Egyptian right flank, but the ball comes back off him before dropping out of play. Story of the match so far. Plenty of willing without the cutting edge.

23' A SLOW BURNER OF A BATTLE

Paraguay so compact in their own half. Content to let Egypt have the ball in their own half, but nothing doing when they try to create space in the opposition half.

21' PARAGUAY QUICKLY BACK INTO THEIR SHAPE

Most of the action is coming from the fans in Marseille with Egypt and Paraguay supporters clearly revelling in the heat. Mohamed Shehata drags a shot well wide of goal.

19' IS A CHANGE COMING?

Mohamed Elneny goes to the side of the pitch for a bit of a run. Not sure he knows if he can carry on. Would be a big blow to the young Egypt side to lose his experience. Seems like a hamstring strain. But he is back on.

17' CONCERN FOR EGYPT

Mohamed Elneny is on the deck here and looks far from happy. Just went down without anybody near him. Never a good sign.

15' PARAGUAY DROP THE PACE

They have made a very vibrant start to this quarter-final, but happy to land on the ball and keep possession at the back as Zizo is caught just offside for Egypt.

13' HOT AND HUMID IN MARSEILLE

Sun still out in Marseille and that could be a factor as this match wears on. Stifling heat and humidity not the best for fast, free-flowing football.

11' POOR SET-PIECE DELIVERY

Julio Enciso throws over a dead ball, but far too much energy on the ball as it flies straight out of play. Yet to really see Egypt in attack in this contest.

9' PARAGUAY CONTINUE TO SEEK OUT SPACE

Perez looking to pick out Diego Gomez with a cross, but just too much pace on the delivery. The South American side have made a decent start to the evening in Marseille. Plenty of intent about their movement.

7' LOOKS LIKE A VERY EVEN CONTEST

Paraguay certainly looking to get the ball wide in the opening exchanges as Alexis Cantero is taken out of the action late. Free-kick cleared by Osama Faisal this time for Egypt.

5' PARAGUAY EARN A CORNER

Egypt forced to look lively to thwart a quick break by Paraguay before Diego Gómez rises to power a header over the bar from the Julio Enciso corner. Just couldn't keep it down.

3' BIG INCENTIVE FOR BOTH SIDES

A match against football giants France or Argentina awaits the winner of this contest. Marcelo Pérez with an early header at goal, but easy enough take by Hamza Alaa in the Egypt goal.
