Hundreds of residents, including an 80-year-old woman, had to be evacuated as heavy rain continued to cause havoc in parts of Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape.

According to the latest update, six people had died, while residents had been relocated to various community halls. 

The SA National Defence Force deployed a helicopter to assess and access inaccessible areas, while Gift of the Givers and Rescue South Africa were on the ground.
