A "seismic-like event" along with a "loud rumble or blast sound" was reported in parts of Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday afternoon. The City of Cape Town's disaster risk management division is investigating its source; a spokesperson told a local news organisation.
"We are investigating – ourselves and fire services," Charlotte Powell, a spokesperson for the disaster management division told news 24.
Many reported on social media that they experienced tremors:
"Yes, my daughter and I felt that earth tremor at about 17:39 #CapeTown #Earthquake," one user said.
"Yetser Energy was seen and felt today in Cape Town, we saw lightning, rumbling of sound of thunder and earthquake, this is very significant in history and only recorded in The Bible," another said.
"Was it just me or was there some sort of an Earthquake Phenomenon in Cape Town again?," said another.
Another user wrote: "Just felt a earthquake at 5: 39 in Cape Town. ????'s rattled. #CapeTown #earthquake."
"Everything just shook, rattled and rolled in @CapeTown ???? Could that tremor have been a mini earthquake?!" wrote another.
According to the news 24 report, tremors were felt in parts of Mowbray to Parklands.
