Gear up for a double midweek dose of Soweto vs Tshwane on Wednesday, 20 September. These match-ups could light up the whole DStv Premiership season. The four teams involved have won 20 of the last 21 top flight titles between them. All of them are there or thereabouts at the top of the table this season and they are all raring to go for their first league game after the international break.

With both games live on Showmax Pro, courtesy of SuperSport, here’s how it stands going into Wednesday’s action.

Pirates vs Sundowns

Sundowns have started their quest for a seventh successive league title with six consecutive wins, which at the moment seems comparable to Kaizer Chiefs’ famous “Gautrain” season when they won their first eight league matches.

The defending champions are a team that take great pride in the records that they set and they will definitely have it in their sights to beat that Chiefs streak (and possible set targets to go beyond it).

The obvious question is this: can anyone stop Sundowns? Well, if anyone can, it’s Orlando Pirates. Last season, they subjected Masandawana to their biggest loss of the season when they beat them 3-0 in the MTN 8 semi-finals.

The signs are there for the Buccaneers that it’s all starting to come together in Jose Riveiro. They’ve won four games in a row, they’re unbeaten in seven and the goals are flowing in.

Zakhele Lepasa has been a revelation in attack. He’s already scored 10 goals in all competitions this season, which is more than what he scored in the last three seasons combined.

It’s only September, but you get the feeling that if Pirates are going to genuinely challenge for the DStv Premiership title this season, they will need to win this clash against Sundowns. A loss will mean that they will fall 14 points behind Masandawana.

Even with two games in hand, that would surely be an insurmountable gap, even at this early stage.

SuperSport United vs Kaizer Chiefs

After an iffy couple of games to start off the season, things are looking up at Naturena, with only one loss in their last six games.

Recently, they went toe to toe with Sundowns in the MTN 8 semi-final and so nearly came away with a win. They had to settle for a very credible draw, which has boosted belief that they are in a position to be more competitive this season.

Their next opponents are SuperSport United, who have experienced a resurgence under Gavin Hunt in his second spell at the club. However, they have spent the international break licking their wounds after a surprising 3-0 loss at home against Golden Arrows.

Hunt’s past history with Chiefs will add to the tension in this fixture. It’s been two years since they parted ways after a solitary season in charge where they finished eighth. For a coach with such a history of success, he’ll always be keen to set the record straight in front of his former employers.

It could be a season-defining three points for whoever gets them. Chiefs could leapfrog SuperSport United or Matsatsantsa could get closer to Sundowns.

All in all, it’s a night that a football fan can’t miss.
